1110 New Format

What's your guess? I know I'm not the first to guess this, but I bet it'll be sports-talk, WFNZ simulcast.
I also predict the calls will change to WFNZ, and 92.7 will become WFNZ-FM. I hope I'm wrong on that, I think 1110 should stay WBT. But I predict 107.9 will change from WBT-FM to WBT, and 1110 from WBT to WFNZ.

I think you may be correct. But we shall see.

I would also prefer 1110 to remain WBT, as that can fill gaps during the day in areas such as Greenville, Columbia, and Greensboro where 107.9 may begin to drop off or be subject to interference from LPFMs and translators. And WBT would continue to have legacy coverage up and down the eastern seaboard after dark, which is something they always bragged about over the years, especially during the Hello Henry era. But I guess they have a different business model in mind, although I wish they would follow WSB which has remained on 750 after moving to 95.5.

My expectation is that 1110 will run mostly syndicated Conservative Talkers to flank the local lineup on 107.9...

Most of the Premiere syndicated shows such as are not cleared in Charlotte. By agreeing to clear the Premiere lineup such as Glenn Beck, Clay Travis & Buck Sexton, and Sean Hannity, which are only on small stations surrounding Charlotte at the moment, Radio One may have prevented iHeart from launching their own completing Talker on FM in the market to pair with 94.5 Greensboro and 106.1 Raleigh. This way iHeart/Premiere gets the best of both worlds. They clear their syndication in a missing Top 25 market and don't need to eliminate one of their existing stations to do so.

Face it AM Radio is dead. WBT was the only AM station that showed in the ratings and it was sinking badly. WPTF Raleigh is long overdue for the same fate.

I disagree. AM radio is certainly dying in many places but not all. Bustos' Tucson classic hits/oldies outlet, KDRI (830 kHz) is still enjoying some good books with encouraging audience numbers. And, as @davideduardo has noted elsewhere on this Board, specialized formats aimed at ethnic minorities still attract AM audiences. That said, I do think that we will continue to see AM stations going off the air, especially those on higher frequencies whose signals don't travel very far and whose night time reach has become very small due to lower output power levels created by non-directional single tower arrays.

A handful of stations doing well with the oldest demographics and many getting most of their listenership on FM translators does nothing to help sway the tide against AM.

Ethnic and religion are the two categories stations turn to when they can no longer compete for ratings.

WBT has been the only Charlotte AM to compete effectively in the ratings race since WAYS gave up in 1983 and WSOC-AM went to simulcast with WSOC-FM in 1985.

I stand by my statement (it gives me no pleasure to say it) AM is dead. I fully expect 107.9 WBT to rise to one of the top 3 stations (it had better). The market for music stations is soft when you can program your own music, commercial free.

AM radio has never done well in "The South", except for the big stations like BT, SB, PTF, etc.

Otherwise the area (particularly the rural regions in my experience) are littered with 500 and 1000 watt graveyarders that cover their respective county, but not much more (if they can get their old transmitters to make full power). Some only during the day.

When the 100,000 watt FMs came to town (think outfits like WRNS 95.1 in New Bern), nobody had any reason to tune into their scratchy local 1450 AM.

Good point, haven't thought of that. Before I read this, I just assumed it was gonna be Sports, but now, I ain't too sure LOL. As they say, we'll wait and see. Being originally from Greensboro (or rather right outside it, but I still claim it as my hometown), I do wish that 'BT would stay the way it is on 1110 (oh and growing up with Hello Henry too), but as has already been said, reckon they are going by another business model.

Yeah, heard that somewhere too, can't remember where. Maybe it was when I talked with the phone screener there a few weeks ago, maybe it was the interview I saw with the morning hosts, maybe it was up here, as in on this site.

This may be the plan. I noticed Mark Levin just got bumped from 107.9 in favor of Nick Craig and Tony Katz. Perhaps he will show up on 1110 along with some of the other national conservative hosts. We shall see. WFNZ is already stable on 610 and 92.7, so I don't see the point in moving that unless they want full clearance of ESPN on 1110. I guess we'll know soon enough.
