Anyone noticed that Star sounds a bit less urban after the holidays? I'm wondering if this will help or hurt them.

Agreed. It sounds like they are starting to hone in and find their niche.
I have seen they have played Finally, What is Love, and Let the Music Play in the last 24 hrs. They got away from m0st of the 80s and 90s dance hits that they played a LOT when they first switched to this format. It got all pushed aside for hip hop. "Hey it's Changes by 2pac talking about how things will never change, what a great feel good throwback" (sarcasm) I would like to see them keep sprinkling in more of those dance hits back into the format. hell, they even played Pet Shop Boys, Yaz, Erasure, etc in those first few months....bring it back!

Yeah they also played New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" at the start as well. Unfortunately, those don't fair well with audiences. Even true classic hits stations avoid those 80's/90's artists for the most part. Still tho I'm surprised they don't, at least play "Pump Up The Volume" by M.A.R.R.S. (1987). It would also be nice to hear stuff like, Cascada's "Every Time We Touch" (2006) or DJ Sammy's "Heaven" (2002) despite being club bangers, these were both fairly moderate hits in the US.
IMHO once you (station) figures out who your target demographic is, you have to figure out what songs drives that group to another station. Unless you are CHR not playing a particular song should not hurt you. I find it hard to believe listerns will stay tuned for 10 hours just to hear a particular song that "defines" a format.
Personally I would let my competitors play songs that will drive listenership to my station. Let my station's tested song list work. I know it tends to be "boring" to some but a tight playlist tends to do good on the ratings. No negative testing songs. I wish there was enough folks that wanted a real variety but most advertising in large markets is bought on covering a demographic not a what your format type listing is.

But they still need a live or even voice-tracked talent in middays. Several months ago, the PD in an AJC story said it would happen, but it hasn't materialized, at least so far. The reality of today's budgets notwithstanding, it would be a sad commentary on the state of radio to have jocks only during the drive times.

Star 94 supposedly has a large female audience. If the play list has faults, blame it on the Atlanta females in the music testing
Back in the late 70's early 80's I worked at three stations there would be considered "chicken rock". It wasn't true Top 40, Country and definitely not MOR. This was before the term Audit Contemporary was used a lot. One PD I worked for call it "house wife rock" off the air of course.
What's wrong with that? It seems to be working. I believe In the past stations have had "better variety" in their slogans and branding. In market #7, I seriously doubt any song gets into rotation without testing.
That "mess" was the number 3 non urban music station in the market in December's ratings. (6+). The Christmas music might have skewed the ratings some but they weren't Christmas music the whole time.
IMHO: A goof song can an "jump" types of music. Especially now with downloads of singles instead of albums or CD sales. If someone hears a song they like, they download it. It doesn't matter if they are wearing a cowboy hat or chains. There was some discussion if Beyonce's Texas Holdem was downloaded by county folks or her established audience but that's another thread. But there were artists who had there songs played on Top 40 and Country radio stations. I am sure I will leave out some but Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gale, and Dolly Parton jumped between Country and Top 40. In fact they were the Mainstays of Chicken Rock format for a couple of stations I worked at during the late 70's and early 80's
That was the very basis for the original "Top 40" format. It was the 40 most popular songs regardless of genre, and Top 40 stations mixed genres based on current trends.
I like Star 94's variety.
