Howard Stern Discusses New Schedule

We knew Stern would reduced his schedule as part of his new three-year contract with Sirius XM. It now seems he's cutting back by a third.

Previously he worked 100 shows a year. His usual schedule was Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday about 34 weeks a year, skipping Monday some weeks for national holidays. He takes off 9 weeks in summer (late June to the Tuesday after Labor Day). He'd also be off for a couple of weeks for Christmas-New Years, Thanksgiving and several other weeks a year.

From now on, he says he will usually work on Mondays and Tuesdays, as he did this week. But sometimes it will be Tuesday-Wednesday, if there's a Monday holiday. So instead of 100 shows a year, I guess the new number is 66. Stern turns 72 next week.

Wow. Only working two days a week. Even Johnny Carson stil did three shows a week before retiring. Stern might as well just hang it up now, what's the point.

Carson was still in his 60s when he retired, and his show was only an hour. He probably kept something close to normal working hours, as his show was taped earlier in the day. Stern, in his 70s, still does 4-5 hour live shows, starting at a very early morning hour.

And I'm sure both hosts do or did plenty of prep outside of airtime.

I would guess the point is that he can still add additional live content to reinforce the brand and keep the channel dynamic. WHich is probably all that Sirius needed out of this contract. The average listener who has the service because of Stern will not be paying the kind of careful atttention to the live show schedule like we obsessives do! :p

The lack of fresh interviews and content made me step away as a listener. Hearing the same interview/segments three times in one week on the way to/from work was too much for me. Doing less shows makes this a bigger problem. They need to drop the second channel or have others on the show do a podcast or new show for additional content.

Bring back the Aftershow

I really wish at this point they'd just post a color coded calendar every month of when he will be live versus not.
This will never happen. The schedule is intentionally opaque to keep you from knowing when he's definitely live, so that you'll maybe keep listening anyway. Even if you take a look at howardstern.com/schedule, it's the same description every day.

"Howard talks about playing guitar, while Robin laughs and Maryanne From Brooklyn calls to tell Howard what a great guitarist he is. Also a Zoom interview with (fill in big name guest here)."
