WBGX 1570

Very belated- I noticed this too. It could be transmitter maintenance. Maybe, they're having technical problems. WBGX (like WWHN) has tweaked their filler music, in the last 2-3 years (more R&B, soul, and blues). I don't listen that much, but I am always curious to tune in.

I forget the exact number of hours but there is "minimum hours" you have to be on the air without a STA. As long as you are operating the minimum hours n STA is required.

I worked at an FM (WPTN FM 94.3 now WGSQ 94.7) in1977 and 1978 that signed off at 10pm. They did sign on at 5am.

If there isn't any income at night 24 / 7 doesn't make economic sense.

Since this is something I needed to look up for another thread, I will share this with you all as well since it better answers the question.

§ 73.1740 Minimum operating schedule.

(a) All commercial broadcast stations are required to operate not less than the following minimum hours:

(1) AM and FM stations. Two-thirds of the total hours they are authorized to operate between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time and two-thirds of the total hours they are authorized to operate between 6 p.m. and midnight, local time, each day of the week except Sunday.

(i) Class D stations which have been authorized nighttime operations need comply only with the minimum requirements for operation between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., local time.

Since WBGX is a Class B station (so the nighttime exemption does not apply) a schedule consisting of eight hours daytime and four hours nighttime would be the minimum to comply with this rule.

WBGX seems to be off the air a lot in recent weeks, especially at night. Anyone know what's going on? The station has been in receivership for quite a long time.
We finally know what went on. The station filed an STA. Christmas Day 2025 (if I have that right), was their last day on air. The question is, will they return? In 1570's case, it's possible. They went silent, a few times, in their history. Some, not all stations, have done this...within a year of going silent. It's still a huge shock. I didn't hear them on the NWI SDR, or on any receiver, much over the last year.
