"Q99-7 is Updating"

While listening to Q99-7 in the car this morning, I heard a liner that said something like, "Q99-7 is updating. Update will be completed on Monday, January 26."

The liner made no reference to a morning show, but of course it piqued my curiosity.
Well, it's better than when Power 99 started with that "Power low, power off. Enjoy the silence" nonsense. We all remember how that turned out.

It's taking until the 26th because the update is coming off a 56k modem.

She announced she’ll be doing afternoons. Current afternoon drive host Jade will be co-hosting a syndicated evening show.

Still no word on mornings.
There's a former Atlanta personality returning to the market to join Q next week. Still working to see how the entire lineup plays out, but we should know fairly soon. Kristin to afternoons had been expected since Bert's departure.

Rodney Ho’s story in the AJC mentioned that Kristin will have a (yet undetermined) co-host. In afternoon drive, I prefer a faster-moving, more-music show with one personality.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me to pair Kristin and Ethan, but they’re both energetic, likable, and full of star quality. If they sound like they’re having fun together — and I think they will — then this show will work well. I look forward to hearing them.

In the early days of PPM, when top 40’s current product was stronger and streaming hadn’t yet commoditized music consumption, I think the imperative to stay music-intensive in afternoon drive was more ironclad. My guess is that Kristin & Ethan will still play 10 or so songs an hour. But more than ever, radio needs to differentiate itself from other forms of audio entertainment. Light talk anchored by one of Atlanta’s best-known personalities is a more compelling — and bankable — proposition in 2026 than nonstop music.

With all of that said, I’m increasingly curious as to what Q is planning for mornings.

Jade, who had been in afternoon drive, has started co-hosting an evening show across Cumulus CHR stations. But I was surprised to see that Q will not be carrying it . . . and more surprised that Jade, in addition to her evening duties, will be doing middays on Q.

As far as mornings, for them to be taking this long, they must be looking for something really great 😊.

The national night show is merely in addition to Jade and Tyler Frye's additional roles with the company as he also hosts mornings in Kansas City. And Q IS carrying the new night show in overnights.
