1110 New Format

I was fortunate enough to work at some great stations with some very talented people, however it was a rocky road at times. So glad to have done it when I did.

There is also Alexa. They provide access to TuneIn stations using voice command, or you can download individual songs, albums, or formats. On the weekends, both WETA and WQXR offer opera, and I don't care for opera, so I just say "Alexa, play Mozart (or Beethoven, or Bach, or what have you)". You can also just ask for classical in general, and Alexa provides a random mix. Alexa does everything I need a streaming audio source to do.
A bit of a tangent I find interesting. Alexa offered us Alexa Plus as a free trial. We said yes and found Alexa Plus significantly inferior to regular Alexa. The voice was harsh and nasal. Alexa Plus could not locate several radio stations that regular Alexa located. After a few tries, I was happily able to get the old Alexa system back with the good voice and ability to easily locate my radio choices. Curious if others tried Alexa Plus and if they liked or disliked it.

Had the same experience. One of my clients went to a great deal of trouble to setup the Alexa skill so it would go straight to their stream instead of TuneIn. Alexa Plus apparently does not recognized the radio streaming skill that they built. I like TuneIn but the multiple play in ads on Alexa are a pain.

Reverted back to old Alexa and all is well. My contact at Amazon doesn't seem to be there anymore. Hope they fix it.

I've had pretty much that exact same experience except that I didn't even want Alexa Plus and didn't ask for it. I had Prime for football the holidays, and it said it was free with Prime, and it automatically enabled it. Ironically, it enabled it the same day I put in to cancel my Prime subscription at the end of the month. I found out it was enabled accidentally when I woke up in the middle of the night, asked for the time, and got a different voice. The next morning, when I was turning off the alarm and hearing my routine, the new voice scared the bejeezus out of my cat!

In addition to Alexa Plus not being able to play as many stations, it also moves a lot more slowly between the items of my morning routine.

I haven't driven in several days so I haven't heard what they're doing now. I could try getting out a different radio and seeing if I can get it to work, but I don't want to change from NPR on my main one.

I listened a lot the last two days I drove somewhere. There's this one song that reminds me of a hit song by Santana that's really good.

They are still stunting with the elevator music.

This is a radio message board. It's what we do here.

I didn't say it was inappropriate, just that the thread now on page 14 and it's much ado about nothing until WBT actually puts whatever the new format is on the air.

You always have the option of just ignoring it.

I didn't say it had to stop or that I wanted to ignore it. I was just commenting on how long it had gone.

Seems like I can't say anything around here anymore without someone reading more into it than intended.

When I hit it to see if it’s changed and I get the music, I feel like I’m binge watching Mad Men.

Yeah, I get that, Mike. And if the discussion was about the station's heritage programming that made it non-ordinary, I would have nothing to say except that I'm glad you have fond memories. Honest.

But a good chunk of this thread has been "they are still stunting with the MOR music" and that's getting old really fast.

For some of us 1110 WBT isn't an ordinary radio station, regardless of format.

Now that's true. I first got acquainted with it through Hello Henry, I believe through 'BIG's coverage thereof, then only on 'BT, but ever since then, it's always been a landmark over the years, even before then for a lot of folk.

I'm glad you see that. That spot on the dial has a rich history. Anyone know what spot WBT held on the dial before the FCC's massive realignment in the early 1940's?

Okay I know they don't sell the nighttime skywave coverage, however I've read more than once ir was that skywave that caught the attention of Greater Media and led to them buying the station.

Hey you know where I was 40 years ago today? I was in the"air chair" at WBT when News Director Scott White came over the intercom saying dump the song and throw it to me now, or words to that effect. It was the result of the Challenger disaster. I was proud WBT stopped the music and went full coverage immediately.

Yes, fond memories, even during tragedy.
