Programmer Out at The River & B98.5

The Friends of Georgia newsletter is reporting that Nate Reed, Operations & Brand Manager at The River and B98.5, is out after 2 years.

You can draw your own conclusions.

Was this a cost cutting measure?
No idea.

Both stations have had solid ratings. The River has slid a little lately, but that's likely a function of the overall format environment. B98.5 had consistently high ratings except for the holiday PPM.

I do not know why Mr. Reed was let go. I will say that I always felt B98.5 never would have gotten away with its partially Christmas format if another station had gone totally Christmas. Listeners wanting to hear Christmas music would immediately defect to the other station. And that's what happened this year. B98.5 did not react when Star 94 went All-Christmas. (And yes, The Fish had been going totally Christmas but with a religious slant.)

Realistically, I don't know whether it would have been possible for B98.5 to turn on a dime in this day when in addition to local programmers, there are national format captains and national program directors. And again, I don't know whether this had anything to do with Mr. Reed's dismissal.

With full knowledge that the Fish had been sold and former Cumulus AC format head (and former B PD) Emily Boldon overseeing Star, you would think there would have been discussions about going all Christmas on B. Still, not flipping should have not been reason for dismissal. Both stations were performing well in the ratings. Still. we have seen many cases in the past where solid programming and good ratings have not saved a PD. Reed was doing two stations. Maybe programming will be taken over at the corporate level for these stations.

IDK about Cox being big enough to have "format Captains". I get the big three radio operators with hundreds of stations and most likely 30 + stations doing the same format going cookie cutter.

Cox might have someone doing all stations of a format but wouldn't there be a big announcement?

Maybe they will let English Nick run 97.1. I doubt Axle would want to risk his morning gig. The other 96 Rock alum Kaedy Kiely might be a safe choice for 97.1
