The updated Radio Insight article mentions a “UFO” sighting. The last time I checked there was a certain Rock station in Portland that somehow fits the description.

1st post on the new website introducing the new station:

"Recently Played" updated web link:

Note: as of this posting, times listed are two hours ahead of Pacific Time (showing as Central Time).
Possibly due to the web page tab for the new website being titled "95.9 The River - Chicagoland's Classic Alternative",
Connoisseur Media's WERV-FM Aurora IL; maybe being used as a template?

Lance has a report up now on the launch:

What I really liked was Townsquare's putting up a countdown clock and then jumping the gun on it. Nice way to throw off the competition, who weren't expecting it until tomorrow.

Does it really throw off the competition? Nobody is counter programming to it. From my domain reports a few weeks ago, everyone in the market knew what was coming and its a niche that's not being touched by anybody else.

I think that, competitor or not, stations in a market notice when a station is stunting, at least initially.

And you yourself have reported on past situations where domain names were registered to hint at formats and then the flip itself was to something else.

I used that as an example since it was openly known in Portland that this was coming since then.

But I don't see how launching a day earlier changes anything? Until one of the TV stations did a story yesterday and interviewed me for it, no common listener knew KUFO was coming and even there it was prefaced that it wasn't a guarantee...

Maybe it's a little of all that. We'll never know for sure.

I listened for a bit late Wednesday evening. I like the imaging, but with that 99 watt signal and hilly terrain to conquer, it probably won't make a big splash. I'm guessing it'll be jockless too, like most things these days.

This is a presumably low budget station on a throwaway signal to make Connoisseur's cluster a little more appealing for male-focused ad buys.

It'll probably earn a 0.6 share or 0.7 share.

Audacy did well by giving its Sports brand a big FM signal in 2025. That paired with KGON and KNRK is tough for other radio groups to match in terms of delivering male ears to advertisers efficiently.

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad this option is available for those who don't like the all over the road playlist of 105.9. I'm amazed 105.9 performs as well as it does. I just don't think 102.9 KUFO will create anything more than a tiny ripple in the marketplace.

I'm not a huge fan of The Brew either. One minute it's Linkin Park, next minute it's Sister Christian. But I do preset it when I pass through the Rose City. KUFO will have a radio nerd audience though with it on KINK's HD2 channel......but we know that never scores ratings, which is too bad.

So… how’s it going with the “new” KUFO? I see their website hasn’t been updated since basically around launch and the concert calendar has dates still up from back in Feb.

When you have very few staff and those who are there have the bigger stations to handle, the side and passion projects tend to get ignored.

I’ll give it a listen next time I’m in town. I will say that when I’ve tuned into 102.9 in Portland it is quite a clean signal for 99 watts. Gets around town and up to Vancouver at least.

Earlier today, I was talking to the help at a local home improvement store and I had my phone on KUFO. He said, "That's a good song". I told him that it was KUFO and they were back. He did a double take. We talked about it for a minute and I got the impression that I had made his day!
