KOLE Port Arthur, TX

Noticed yesterday that KOLE 1340 Port Arthur, TX is back on programming Classic Country. After being silent for quite some time are they just keeping their license active?

I’m in NW Harris County and hearing a weak open carrier beating against something else on 1340. The other two nearest 1340s to me are in Lufkin and Victoria; I have recently heard only the faintest of signals on that frequency during the day, nothing intelligible.

AM radio in the Golden Triangle is essentially dead, outside of KLVI.

Should note that KIKR 1450 and KBED 1510 have been off the air for almost a year now. Will be interesting to see if Cumulus briefly reactivates them to keep the licenses alive, or if they turn them in to the FCC. Appears no potential buyers have come forward.

Keep in mind that KRBA tends to have some lengthy periods of silence of its own.

When I read this the other day, it inspired me to go dig up some old audio of my Dad on KOLE in the early 1960's. Pretty gripping stuff, coverage of Hurricane Carla, and the announcement of the birth of my older brother on the NBC Network show "Monitor". You will also find some vintage commercials and other goodies "King Kole" goodies.

If I remember correctly when the Hicks owned KOLE there was a bowling alley on Gulfway DR called Bowl King KOLE and yes, Action Central News

King KOLE Bowl! -my Mom said one of the 'perks' of working for Pappa John Hicks was that you could bowl there for FREE if you worked for KOLE!

Back when I was in BEaumont for a few months, we found the KOLE TX Site that seemed to need a bit of work.. . and i wanna say, though its hard to remember after 10 years.. i think the address we found as their supposed studio was the tx site. There is a listen live link for KOLE on the Birach.com site but i ont know if it works, im not in a place where I can test it.

I don't think they are running a full 1kw as they are extremely weak in east central Orange County now. I heard preaching on 1340 yesterday but was unsure if it were them on someone else
