Classic WBT Briarhoppers Spot

Found this somewhere online, years ago and wasn't quite sure where to put this thread (as in what topic), but here it is. Sounds like two spots put togethere, but nonetheless, it is classic, mostly from (apparently) the end of a Briarhoppers show on WBT. I get a kick out of his ID at the end, only he could get by with it LOL.

I just hate to see the old station go. I grew with Hello Henry, nuff said.

Even though he has recently retired, Bob Lacey should listen to this spot.
Sheri Lynch should also listen to this spot.

I believe I've heard of them before. Are they the ones who used to be on 107.9 in the mornings? Other than probably getting a kick out of it, why do you say they should listen to it? I'm all for it, just askin'.

You won't get a reply back from the person who posted. They were banned from the site the day after they joined. I don't know what they possibly did to only last here less than 24 hours. Lol

The Briarhoppers announcer says "This is WBT and just across the street from WAYS." I know that before the Kaplans bought WAYS it was in the RadioCenter at 3329 South Blvd (demolished just a couple of years ago, WAYS moved to Radio Road in Oakdale in the early 1960s). WBT was in the Wilder Building at 3rd and Tryon St (demolished 1983 and WBT moved to Julian Price Place in 1955). I don't guess he meant LITERALLY across the street, but maybe "down the dial." Now days no station would even mention another station unless owned by the same company. Ironically 1110 and 610 are now actually owned by the same company. Not sure of the timeline of this recording, but The Briarhoppers were on WBT from 1934-1951. In the early years of that there were only 3 stations in charlotte, 1110 WBT, 610 WAYS and 1240 WSOC. WSOC swapped frequencies with WIST in 1960 from 1240 to 930.
Oh and Josh, Bob (Lacey) and Sheri (Lynch) were the morning hosts on WLNK (when co-owned with WBT) for years. Bob had been with WBT and WBTV for years, starting on radio when he was in his teens.

Thanks and yeah, I just saw that heading right after their screen name, so I am aware of their status, twice. Dunno what they did to get banned, no tellin', but I'm glad they enjoyed what I posted LOL.

Roger on that and thanks for the history lesson. Yeah, I caught the irony of the stations being owned by the same company, a while back, too. I believe that was Mr. Crutchfield (can't remember his first name), the owner of the station in those days. That's why I said he did the spot/ID as only he could LOL. Yeah, I wondered if they were the Morning DJs for 107.9 back in the days, thanks for clarifying.

Don't mean to requote, but did you say WIST?
What was their COL, when they were on 930? 'SOC used to be on 1240, so, that means, when J.E. Mainer was on their back in the '30s, before they hit it big and moved on up the dial, he was on a very weak station out of Gastonia, according to what I've either read or heard online, can't remember which.

I'm only getting a lot of this from Wikipedia, so it might not be 100% accurate. On 12/5/1928 1210 kHz came on the air in Gastonia, as WRBU with 100 watts. On 11/29/1930 the call letters were changed to WSOC. Three years later the station moved to Charlotte. In 1941 the NARBA frequency change moved them to 1240 kHz. Sometime in the late 1950s the power was increased to 1000 watts. In 1960 the 1240 frequency was swapped with WIST at 930 khz. The 930 frequency was originally WIST, starting in 1951, with a COL of Charlotte from the beginning. WIST was a sister station to WIS in Columbia, SC.

Apparently J.E. Mainer and his younger brother Wade (with their band, the Mainer's Mountaineers) were on WSOC until 1934 when they were hired for WBT's Saturday night "Crazy Water Barn Dance."

The recording of WIST Thomasville, The Great 98 is from 98.3 FM, the station that was originally WTNC-FM. It has had several call letter changes since 1981 including WEYE, WTHP, WFAZ, WIST-FM and WIST. Since 2005 it's been on it's second time as WIST-FM. They were WIST (without the FM suffix) from Dec 2004 to Nov 2005, so the recording must have been made during that time, before the format change in October 2005 to "Country Legends."

Roger on all of the above, even Wiki's inaccuracy. Speaking of WIST, Thomasville, the recording was from sometime in 1997, can't remember exactly when, probably early that year, since everything else on that mixtape was from early of that year, recorded by an old friend who passed away (I believe) shortly thereafter, who lived in Walkertown at the time and did so until his death. I didn't know the history of WIST, such as it being a sister station to the station in Columbia, SC. I did know about 98.3 being the old WTNC FM, from growing up in the area and having another old friend who worked for a time at 'TNC. Come to think of it, I had a couple of radio friends who worked there, when it was 'THP (The Hub of the Piedmont), it was Oldies in those days. When it was 'FAZ, it was CCM, remember those days, too. Wasn't there some kind of connection with them and 'EGO, 1410 in Concord? I don't believe it's 'EGO anymore, just thinking out loud now. Is there a WIST AM now?

It looks like their calls were WIST-FM then, so maybe that cut isn't a legal ID.

I don't think there's a WIST on the AM dial, and the WEGO connection is probably through GHB broadcast, George Buck
1. That's possible, it's what I've got though LOL.
2. Thanks.

That sounds like Mr Charles Crutchfield youngest program director of WBT back during it's CBS ownership. He later became General Manager of WBT and then President of Jefferson-Pilot Broadcasting. Anyone who cares to know just how influential WBT-WBTV was may want to read this book

That's be the one. Thanks for the info and recommendation. BTW, I believe I just may have heard you on 'BT back in the day and maybe 'SOC, as mentioned in another thread.

I meant, that'd be the one. Reckon my finger slipped over one key too far. :D)

This is correct to the best of my knowledge.

Okay here ya go, listen to as much of this as you care to: SoundCloud
is it me or is soundcloud just hard to navigate? if i click that link i can only proceed if i sign in. then if i sign in i can ONLY get to your link. i have to manually go to soundcloud.com to do ANYTHING else. I'm still logged in, but now I can't find your page again until i click the link again and the whole circle starts over. the only "fix" is to follow your page, and then manually go to soundcloud.com again.
WHY are there no links on your page except for your content? No upper soundcloud bar?

It's not just you, get the same issues. I thought about uploading and all I gotta say right now, is, forget it! All due respect to all who upload stuff there, greatly appreciate it, but I can't access rss feeds for most pages up there and have no way to download most stuff up there. Maybe I'm missing something.
