1110 New Format

If WGNC is in a contract with Premiere, wouldn't WBT have to wait until the current contract ends? Maybe, that's the holdup....

Yeah, I thought of that, too. In the words of a DJ from back home and back in my past, due to contractual obligations, the game is delayed.

Columbia? Maybe I'm missing something, but, I don't see how that's even listenable in Charlotte.
It might not be. I'm just going by the contours on Radio-Locator. They are right on the edge of the "distant" threshold before it gets to fringe reception.

If someone were motivated to listen to it, they might be able to, at least on a car radio, but it likely wouldn't be acceptable to everyday listeners.

But wouldn't WBT have known such details before they stuck their necks out, assuming they were going after that format and something went wrong?

HMMM, interesting, didn't know they were doing this now and out of King's Mountain, none the less LOL. I'm kinda confused, though, which doesn't take much LOL. Are Clay and Buck on from 12-3 or Dave Ramsy. I know C&B's Fast Time (as we say here) is 12-3, 'cause I hear them some on 'HAS then, just wondering. Looks like something's out of date, somewhere. Oh and DR is kinda like Jay Seculo (sp) Live (not), most stations air him anytime. No offense to him at all, just stating what I've seen on program logs, etc.

By the looks of the schedule it's C&B 12-3, followed by a whopping 6 hours of Dave Ramsay from 3-9 pm. His show must be very popular these days.

I'd say yes, they would have known all that. Wonder how long the contracts are for?

That ain't what I saw. There seems to be some discrepancy between the Programs link and the program log, per say. I'll look again, first chance I get. Like I said, his show is like Jay Seculo (however you spell it), you can put it anywhere/anytime. Oh and I believe I misquoted earlier, re: contractual obligations. Due to contractual obligations, the airing of the game will be delayed.

I was just looking at the demographics, and the majority of the Hispanic/Latino population is in Mecklenburg, Union (NC) and Cabarrus counties. 100.9 covers that population well in Mecklenburg and most of Union, and if they pair it with 1110 they could cover Cabarrus and the Union fringes. It's a growing population, and definitely an underserved market. I don't know what the billing on a Spanish station looks like, but you'd have the population covered with 100.9/1110 combo.

There would be no need for 99.3 because of the low Hispanic population in the western counties, and you could pair it with 92.7 for increased sports coverage. I think that makes a lot of sense.

I would think that any good business plan would have a Plan B, a Plan C, and so on.
A format shift is either dictated by expert analysis of the market (including revenue opportunities) or in-depth research, such as a "format search".

In either case, once a decision is made, the entire effort is spent on preparing for it, not for fallbacks.
Maybe they thought that the plan they had, if indeed it has fallen through, was so "in the bag" that they didn't need to think in those terms.
I've spent most of my career launching new stations and formats. I never had a "backup plan". In one case where the format did not get the desired results, we worked on it for two years before making a switch.

I see now what you saw. The link only has Glenn Beck and Dave Ramsay, while the home page lists Beck, Hannity, and C&B. I was mistaken about the 3-6 pm, that's for Hannity. Is it possible C&B, and Hannity were removed because they are headed over WBT-AM. Questions, more questions. Hmmm...

if I were WEBK/WRBK I would be more concerned about nearby Co-Channel 91.1 WYBH in Fayetteville NC, even moreso than neighboring WLGI on 90.9. Seems alot closer than WEBK having to protect WLTR on 91.3 in Columbia or even WYFG 91.1 in Gaffney.
I don't know if it's still there but Richmond County Schools had a station on 91,1.

And there's WLGI Radio Baha'i at 90.9 which used to mess up WEBK past I-95.

Dumb question, but does Premiere make different shows from its lineup available to different stations in the same market, IOW, could one station carry C&B and Hannity, and another one Glenn Beck and Jesse Kelly (for instance)?

Yes, there can be multiple stations airing different Premiere shows in a market. For example, in Indianapolis, Clay and Buck airs on a different station (Fox Sports 1260) than Hannity and Beck (Freedom 95), and Coast to Coast airs on WIBC 93.1.

BTW, Glenn Beck announced he is ending his radio show, and Dave Ramsay does his own syndication. It's interesting that the two removed shows are from Premiere, which adds more fuel to the fire that 1110 is working on a deal with them.

I believe, it's different for every market, how syndication is handled. But since the goal is to get every show into every market, a syndicator's shows can be broken up on more than one competing station.

What if all this is a set up to sell 1110 to Beasley or iHeart? I’m sure iHeart would launch a talker or Beasley using it for one of their hd channels (Fox Sports or Spanish).

What if all this is a set up to sell 1110 to Beasley or iHeart?
If that were the case, why migrate their news-talk format to 107.9? They could have just sold 1110 and maybe 99.3 and put whatever they want (or keep mix) on 107.9. Radio One does have a news-talk in Indy, but it's not what they're known for. It would certainly be ironic if 1110 would go to another operator just for them to compete with BT-FM with a news-talk format. I don't think so.

As PTBoardOp mentions, Premiere does allow different shows on other stations in the same market. It might, however, offer a right of first refusal to people who carry its existing shows. Seems like one of the stations where I worked was forced to carry On-Air with Ryan Seacrest because someone else was interested in it, and we were offered it first because we had American Top-40. If that station had picked up On-Air, we would've also lost AT-40. Maybe that was a unique case, however, because the two programs had the same host, but the right of first refusal is a fairly common practice in the industry.

Sell WBT? I highly doubt that was ever in the cards for Radio One. They moved a decently performing station from a dinosaur band with a signal disadvantage to an FM. What happened with the replacement programming for the AM we don’t know, but I highly doubt they EVER considered selling the WBT brand. Radio One wants stations like WIBC (highly successful) and WBT. As a company they’re trying to diversify away from stations targeted solely at African-Americans, and this helps them do just that.

Thanks. Also, it looks like there's a woman on on Mondays from 5:30
