Changes at KFI?

1. Rich didn't switch to a podcast overnight.

Right. According to the article he gave them one week.

When Rich Valdes left America at Night, Westwood One found a replacement in about a week.

His contract was up, and the company knew they weren't going to renew. So they were ready. Not the case at WPHT.

IMO. Radio management should focus on why people choose RADIO. You can't be all things to all people.

I think they have, which is why they haven't completely shut down their radio stations. It's a long slow transition. They're trying to serve both audiences because both are still sizable. But the fact is the podcast audience is growing, while the broadcast audience is declining and aging.

Once again, this isn't just about radio management. As I said, some of these decisions are being made by the talk show hosts because they feel it's best for their careers. That's what Rich Zeoli said. He's not the only one. Glenn Beck is saying the same thing.

But the point @wadio is making is valid. Podcasts, by their very nature of being individual programs, are not likely to "replace" terrestrial radio. And a lot of the content of podcasts is not being considered for radio (nor should it be, since podcasts are a pretty good definition of "narrowcasting". Using my example, not everyone is a fan of Olbermann's political commentaries and even if he wanted to (he has stated emphatically many times that he does not) trying to make a twice-weekly podcast into a daily broadcast program would make a lot of what he reports and opines repetitious by the end of the first week.

Yes, the podcast audience is growing. But streaming services are a bigger threat in the immediate future.

I agree, which is why I said the radio companies are doing both. We can see it in practice at the broadcast stations that choose to air podcasts.

But nothing changes the fact that the budgets for broadcast radio are declining because of audience and revenue. So while OTA radio will remain, it won't be live & local 24/7.

Broadcast radio would love to have someone like Joe Rogan, but they can't afford him, and he reaches more people as a podcast. Plus he only has to work for about an hour a day! Why would he leave that to do a 4 hour daily radio show?
He actually works four days a week and his shows are usually two-and-half to three hours without the live reads. So he's doing a show that's close to or more than a four hour show.

Andy Reismeyer is filling in 7-10 pm tonight. Since the announcement is at the beginning of the prior show, safe to deduce it's about a permanent host (Merrill) for 7-10 pm.

This was posted in Friday's LA Daily News in Richard Wagoner column.

Word on the street is that KFI is planning to make some minor programming changes; I am betting that more will come, but they may arrive slowly. Will it stay local? Can talk survive in its current form? Can we bring back a full news department?
So the big news is there switching tim.conway to 6 to 10 and john Kobylt from 3 to 6...Not earth shattering news...

New lineup:

Handel 6-9, Gary and Shannon 9-12, Michael and Chris 12-3, John Kobylt 3-6, Conway 6-10

Ratings for Conway not as good as when on at night according to Conway himself.

As a fan of Conway since the beginning (2010), I know this is a demotion. But I'm excited to have him on evenings again. I've spent the last few years listening to his podcast in the car during his old time slot, just out of habit.
