WDAE Gets Full Powered FM Upgrade; Rumba Moves To 95.3/102.9

I don’t feel motivated to compile this myself, but does anyone have a list of local iHeart sportstalkers that are still confined to AM? KLAC in Los Angeles and KBME in Houston are two that come to mind.

In Milwaukee, they have WOKY, which has a local statewide morning show, and FOX Sports the rest of the day. Until October, they had a long-struggling FM sports talker, but they flipped it to AC*, went Xmas a month later, and shot up to #1 in the Holiday overall book.

They also have an AM sports talker, sans FM, in Madison.

*See Wisconsin board for more details. Particularly about K-Love buying the previous AC station that they acquired the intellectual property of.

KGB 760 in San Diego comes to mind. I believe they have a local early afternoon and afternoon show.

Pat Donovan just posted on social media that he has hosted his last show on WDAE. This despite Tom Krasniqi posting on social media that the morning show would be unchanged…? 😦

@Fighting Irish Wasn’t the Madison AM station part of the ill-fated “GAME” network?
Yep. They were trying to do in Wisconsin what KFAN did in Minnesota, along with a statewide network. But KFAN, one of the earliest sports stations in the country, had a 25 year head start, and was on AM before moving to FM and becoming the juggernaut that it currently is. When IHM started up The Game in Milwaukee, there were already two other sports talk stations, one full-power FM and a translator, owned by Good Karma and Audacy respectively. The network was essentially Madison, Eau Claire and a Green Bay affiliate. Even with the Packers and UW sports, the best 97.3 ever did was around the low 2's. So, when a top-rated AC station sold to K-Love, they opted to scrap the sports idea and go with the easy money. It was the smarter choice.

Question. The article says that 95.3 and 102.1 were currently simulcasting the 1150 kHz classic hip-hop format. Does this mean that 1150 kHz will be going Rhumba as well or will the translators be simulcasting an IHM HD2, 3, or 4 channel already in existence.

95.3 has been simulcasting 620, while 102.9 has been simulcasting 106.5 in Sarasota since the move/swaps of Beat and Rumba nearly two years ago. 102.1 has been simulcasting 1150, which isn’t being changed (nor are they owned by iHeart). (1150/102.1 have been airing ESPN for a bit now.)

Where are you seeing anything about 1150 in that article? 1150 isn’t even owned by iHeart, and it hasn’t played hip hop in years.

This is another incidence of what I have been politely (but firmly) suggesting for some time: Before creating a post containing "facts" that you think you know but might be wrong or outdated on, please consult the search engine of your choice and doublecheck same.

No one likes to appear uninformed (or stupid, for that matter), and doing your own fact checking saves one from that. (Yes, I do it myself ... and the only problem is that it doesn't keep me from making typos.)

Thanks for the corrections. When reading Lance's article, I remembered that 1150 kHz a while back had a rhythmic oldies format that is now sports and I hadn't realized that 106.5 (though @lanceventa wrote it) had gone classic hip-hop.

To @K.M. Richards, I really don't worry anymore about getting egg on my face. I'm 62 now, am (mostly) retired from what I was doing (it wasn't in the radio industry) and I've come to understand that making mistakes comes with the territory when learning new things. I'll try to do better in the future but I can't say that I will always succeed.

Finally (and this is what I should have asked in my original response), where will the rhumba programming originate from that is being rebroadcast on the translators at 95.3 and 102.9 since translators cannot originate their own programming.

I'm gonna go ahead and brag a bit and remind you that I suggested this 3-4 years ago (maybe even longer) when The Beat was circling the drain and iHeart lost the Lightning to 102.5. ...And I guarantee you that the Rays played a part in demanding this as oh look at the timing... right before the MLB season starts. Also, when Rumba was moved to 95.7 it did nothing but spread out the same audience between Maxima, Zol, Mega, and Rumba to no one's benefit.

Confirming the previous posts... ESPN Radio on WTMP 1150 simulcasts on translators 92.9 in Hillsborough and 102.1 in Pinellas.

102.9 in Tampa is legally a translator for WFUS-2 which currently broadcasts WBTP. 95.3 in St. Pete is legally the translator for WRUB-3. It'll be interesting to see what they move around on the HD2's and 3's and who gets what. It would be sad to lose The Beat on one of the Tampa FM HD channels.

Some iHeart Sports stations that are AM only:

980 WOFX Albany
550 KTZN Anchorage
1300 KVET Austin
800 KBFP Bakersfield
1430 WENE Binghamton

And that's just the As and Bs.
