KIXL 970 changing call to KYOW

Call change to KYOW effective February 24. Still owned by Relevant Radio. The station has had the KIXL call since 1974.

970 was originally KASE 1959-64 (no relation to the current FM) then KHFI 1964-69, and KTAP 1969-74.

Wonder why the change? Relevant has also recently requested a new call for their WNTD in Chicago, becoming WSFS.

After KLBJ AM, KIXL has the second strongest Austin AM signal here in Canyon Lake. I’ve never tried for them at night, but my guess is they are not able to be heard.

Didn’t they run a Progressive Rock format in the early 70’s with a different set of calls?

During the KTAP incarnation 1969-74 the station had a format that was at a glance Top 40, but would better be described as broadly Contemporary as the music would frequently stray outside the current chart hits, and included some then current Progressive Rock, Europop, and other music KNOW didn’t touch. It could be quite adventurous at times.

During the last year of the KTAP call (1973-74) the station had what you might call a soft progressive contemporary format with music and artists not heard elsewhere in the market.

The call was changed to KIXL in 1974, with a flip to a MOR format that was very similar to the KASE/KHFI incarnation from 1959-69. That didn’t work, and the station flipped to pre-Beatles oldies in 1975. That didn’t work either, and in 1976 the station owners threw in the towel on trying to compete with a music format, and flipped the station to brokered religion. 970 has been some sort of religious format ever since.
