WHK issue

WHK was off-the-air on Friday night and that continues on Saturday morning, 03/07/2026. Their transmitter is not on. No information about this, that I saw, on their website at WHKradio.com.

By sometime before 9:15 am, WHK, AM 1420 is back on-the-air with a good, strong signal. I'd like to hear the back-story on this.
Curious that both WHKW and WHK were down. Did their translators stay on? I can't get good reception on those. And yes, I just checked on 1420 and the audio sounds a lot "fuller" than it had been sounding for months before.

WHKW also sounded fine as well for the quick few seconds I lingered on 1220.

But you still need antennas, receivers and most importantly a clear shot to the transmitter site. If all that is already there and you aren't moving the studios, great.
But the internet connection can also give remote access to readings and equipment adjustments from anywhere. As long as the ISP doesn't go down.
And stations who just relay network programmming don't need an STL
BTW, I saw speculation that a reason 19 and 43 didn't build new studios in Independence had to do with not being able to get a clear microwave path. Why, I don't know.
Most of the remote control units automatically make adjustments. If the unit can't fix it most likely you can't fix it with an off site laptop. Depending on the setup the remote control will call your cellphone. Some cellphones have an amazing amount of computing power. Your don't really take meter readings anymore except for an occasional check.

The only reason anybody would use an Internet STL is when microwave path won't work or you have an engineer that only has IT experience and is clueless or in the process of learning RF transmission. Using an Internet STL makes you station a target for any hacker IN THE WORLD. The "world wide web" is just that. Of course microwave can be "jammed" but that has to be done within the path or very very close to the receiver.

I don't know where some folks got the idea that prooperly installed Microwave STL are undependable maintaince expense. Every station I have ever been at that had a microwave STL, it was one of the most dependable pieces of equipment in the station.*. Of course all bets are off when lightning visits but usually the STL is not the highest "target" on the tower. BTW copper cable and phone circuits a subject to lighting too.

*The coffee machine HAS to work if you have live morning drive!

A lot of iheart stations only have people in the office three days a week, so by letting people create and record their own ads it saves them having to open the building/studios on a day when no one’s scheduled to be there, just to have someone make a spot.
I thought iHeart had gone to regional production hubs. They cut the spot and then electronically send it to the stations it services. Allowed iHeart to get rid of a bunch of folks.

Not sure but in some rural markets I hear promos directing people to call an 844 number to advertise and the promo aired says "you can have your ad on air in like 24 hours"

Most coffee machines (especially Keurig) can make tea and really decent hot chocolate too. I needed caffeine at 5AM when I was doing morning drive.
Well, the only thing you'd hear in AM drive if I was doing it after drinking coffee would be me projectile vomiting. Of course I could palm it off as the latest rap song.

I had never heard of a coffee allergy before. I have learned something. I do know there are lots of folks that have issues with creamers and sweeteners. From what I can gather from the Cleveland Clinic website it is rare but still really bad.

Then there is caffeine which is a two edged sword 🗡️. I personally needed something to wake me and since I usually wrote or cut compercials during the music. Coke cola or Pepsi is too sweet. A warm beverage always helped me especially during allergy season.

If I understand Karma correctly you might be due something in return for this allergy. Tonight Mega Millions is $530 million, $244 million if you take the cash option.
