Bill Kurtis To Retire

Former CBS newsman Bill Kurtis will retire from NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me:

He replaced Carl Kassell. He says he will fill in as needed.

Personally, I really enjoyed his presentation and smooth delivery introducing shows/movies on the original Decades Channel. A better choice for an initial presenter could not have been made.

Bill Kurtis was the near-perfect person to replace Karl Cassell. Karl always played it straight, never mugging on mic, in keeping with his weekday role as Serious News Anchor on Morning Edition newscasts. Bill could be self-deprecating, or an over-the-top "Voice of God", depending on what Wait Wait needed at a given moment. There was always a chuckle and a wink in his voice. The two, in turn, served the needs of the show at the times they appeared on it. Good luck and good retirement to Mr. Kurtis, well deserved, I hope it's a long healthy one and not necessitated by health concerns (as Cassell's was).

He was off Saturday, leading me to believe the retirement already began.

tell me you didnt read the article without telling me you didnt read the article, if what the article says on his retirement date is true

He has been on two of the four shows since the announcement.

Last week Negin Farsad hosted in place of Peter Sagal. You have to admire her for doing it just weeks after, as a mere panelist, she said she was concerned about her family in Iran. I'm sure her concerns are greater now.

And Alzo was back today.

I haven't heard who might replace Bill, but Alzo has been the only substitute since the announcement.
It could be as simple as Bill burning off the vacation he has on the books before the retirement date. Or ... Alzo might be his replacement, and this is how the producers are finessing the transition. Or both. (Or neither.)

He was back this week but it was what the local announcer called an "encore" episode. some interviews and other content were reruns. Some content was new because there is too much for one episode.
