Wow look at Kroqs numbers...

Quite a difference from 6 years ago when there numbers were horrible even for 6+. I know it's the numbers underneath the numbers that matter. Kroq has been beating myself alt 98.7 in 6+ numbers for awhile now. What are they doing right in peoples opinion?

Why not post a link so we can all see???

Yes, KROQ has figured it out. What are they doing right? People prefer Kevin to Woody.

The demos for the morning show have been great for a while.

I like Kevin in the afternoon but do not care at all for the morning show. I will take the woody show over Klein ally show. And quit trying to shove the morning show down peoples throats...Two hours at night and till 11 AM every morning...I know there beating just but it's still overkill in my opinion...Kevin and bean were far superior to Klein/Ally show.

KROQ is #1 or #2 in all the key demos while KYSR ranked #6 25-54 and #4 18-34. Cume-wise they're not that far apart.

It must be nice to have two Alternative stations battling it out in the same market and still see them perform so well in spite of the competition.

Klein and Ally have been grinding away for almost five years. It’s good to see people finally find them. They are authentic and I think people like that.

What is interesting is that alternative rock does so well in a market that is over half Hispanic in the sales demos.

There should be some discussion of the fact that the only place in Latin America where an alternative format does very well is Mexico City. In other countries, alternative is not a viable format at all.

Nationally speaking, the alternative format gets about 15% listening from Hispanics, while rock gets only 9%. It is by far the largest minority.
I think the shortfall among Hispanics for rock comes from the really older age of the content on most straight rock stations. Hispanics are younger, and a large percentage did not grow up on the music classic rock stations play. Alternative is younger, even on the gold based alt stations.

The pendulum of musical trends always swings back, eventually.

Rosalia features alternative icon Bjork on her recent single, a major departure from the typical Latin pop formula. Regardless of whether or not it's a big radio hit, she's quite influential.

That, along with the numbers for the alternative stations in L.A., point to something interesting happening in the music preferences of these age groups

They are probably half the budget of K&B, and cheaper than Woody, and are beating Woody.

Bjork is an icon and that song slaps

I think it's two things:

1. They re-engaged a lot of their P1s by embracing the station's culture. Bringing back Kevin in the afternoons and Sluggo in middays, expanding and growing the Klein & Ally show, and bringing back the original imaging and sound design that the station had in its heyday. It's comforting to hear something familiar with so much change and economic uncertainty.

2. Nostalgia is very in right now with younger listeners. Just think about how "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls is a top viral song. Deftones, System of a Down, Sublime, Nirvana, Korn have also found some vitality on social media platforms. This positions KROQ perfectly because they are the modern rock station that broke many of these bands, and clearly it's reflecting in the numbers.

I'd add a third. I was in Los Angeles earlier this month and spent a lot of time with KROQ.

There's something bubbling up there and at some other Alternative stations with new music similar that last happened around 2017 with new core artists for the format developing. In this case some launching at Top 40 and now retrenching to Alternative such as Sombr, Royel Otis, Noah Kahan, Tame Impala, Cannons and Young The Giant. A lot of these songs doing well on TikTok and such.

But does that suggest a broad resurgence of Alternative as a dedicated format, or do more mainstream formats like Top 40/Hot AC simply jog a little towards the trend? KROQ has a heritage that most other Alt stations lack.

Do you see the same inroads being made by alternative rock among other sizable LA minorities -- Russian? Japanese? Filipino? Iranian?

There is no scientific measurement of any of those groups with which to compare past and present listening levels. Any evidence of that would be highly informal "I have some Persian friends" type information.

Interesting interview with Klein & Ally. Klein mentions possibly expanding the show to other cities (1:03:30). They started out that way and it was a mess.

Heidi and Frank are now syndicating to other markets. Maybe the time is right for Klein and Ally to give it a try ( again).
