Oscar ratings fall 9% in Conan O’Brien’s second year hosting

I never watch the Oscars but I did notice the show was on late afternoon here in Arizona instead of its usual prime time spot.

Wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Didn't like my first guess huh? OK, here's some more possible reasons:

9% didn't like the candidates
Too much fluff between award announcements
Conan the ignorable

I could go on......

The audience for the Oscars is mostly female. I sense you're not. Females like the fluff. Most of them didn't see the actual movies.

In other words, it's not about the movies, it's about the show. Audiences for all linear TV is down, regardless of the topic.

What mattered was the online and social media chatter generated by the show, and they monetize that as well.

Despite lower TV ratings, ABC reported a 42% increase in social media impressions for the Oscars over 2025, reaching over 184 million.

Conan didn't attract a geeky single male demographic?

Not a surprise they were down, for many factors.

I think 2025 was likely the post pandemic high water mark. Unless some widely watched and popular films get nominated in the next few years, viewership is likely to be flat to falling. At some point, the telecast will no longer be the 2nd most watched after the Super Bowl. Conan certainly didn't help.

That "some point" will be 2029, when the Oscars move to YouTube, and will no longer be judged by Nielsen ratings:

I don't watch any of the movies that win other then 1 or 2 at most that is The Oscars problen is hte general public doesn't watch or care for in my opinion.
