Tower Being Dismantled?

Hmmmm, never seen this before. I have heard of this organization (years ago, they were big down south), but am unaware of this station.
▪ American Family Association’s 88.3 WXBE Beaufort NC (Tower being dismantled)

That tower belonged to a paging/two-way outfit called Anser-Quik and the owner Art Gill passed away a couple years ago. I’m not surprised it’s being dismantled. It’s a self supporter hemmed into a neighborhood on a tiny plot of land - a remnant of things tower owners used to be able to get away with.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks, never seen that before. Also, pardon my ignorance yet one more time, but, does this mean the station is silent for good? Just curious, seeing as I am personally unfamiliar with these circumstances.

No, as long as they can find a new structure for the antenna they can return to air. This one was just leased so they could presumably lease space from someone else around. That might not be worth the cost, though.

The licensee will have one year to restore operation. If they do not, they forfeit their license.
Since restoring operation from the licensed antenna will be impossible, they will first need to seek FCC permission to operate from a different tower and antenna.

I agree that this is an unusual situation. There are very few radio stations with their towers on the Outer Banks, presumably due to the threat of hurricane winds, which limits the towers that WXBE might move to.

That isn’t the Outer Banks. Morehead City is on the mainland. The Outer Banks start at Ocracoke and go north from there.

There is an ~800ft tower at Open Grounds Farm east of Beaufort that a couple other radio stations transmit from. The main tenant was WFXI/TV8 but that station has long since signed off after taking a spectrum buyout.

Ah, gotcha, makes sense.

Roger on that and I did think about the Outer Banks issue. Thanks for chiming in.

My geography is horrible, I thought it was considered the Outer Banks. It's at least the Coast so that does present a problem.

Well actually Carteret County has quite a bit of The Outer Banks, the Cape Lookout National Seashore all the way Cape Lookout to Portsmouth Island.

Oops, that's true - I forgot about Portsmouth Island and Cape Lookout. It not being accessible by car completely removed it from my mind.

I would like to visit Portsmouth sometime, but they say the mosquitoes are legendary!

We went there a few years ago in late spring and the deer flies were vicious. We actually wore beekeeping suits while attempting to walk around the village, and the biting flies chased us indoors even with protection and insect repellent.

Probably best to go in the winter months if that is an option.

Wow, roger on that. I'd apply the last above bit of logic to all the Coast and I can't see a thing LOL.
