Legacy calls? That made me chuckle. Nobody even knows WDJO exists. Getting the WKRP call letters might be the best bet for them. But can whoever gets them monetize them?

The WKRP call letters are for sale. Will they live on the air in Cincinnati?

I didn't say that. I said the station in Raleigh is already WKRP-LP (follow the link to the page at Michi's site in my original post) and therefore there cannot be a second WKRP-LP.
If, as reported, the Raleigh station is ceasing operations, wouldn't they have to change calls before they could allow another LPFM to use them, and -- as @passtheword has suggested -- that would leave them open for someone to grab them?
I suppose they could do one of those call letter exchanges that have sometimes accompanied station sales or commonly owned stations, but I have to admit that I haven't seen that tried in the LPFM service.

I'm still kinda hoping for a WKRP 1530 AM, given that was the frequency the fictional WKRP used to broadcast on in the 1991 TV series. There's supposedly a WKRP station on the Iheart Radio app from what I read someone post about on a WKRP fan site on Facebook, but i was never able to find such doing a search. I do know that Iheart does have the WCKY-FM call sign on a station around Toledo, so if WCKY were to become WKRP, Iheart would still have the WCKY call letters available if they ever wanted to restore the call sign back to 1530 at a later time. There's also WSAI to consider for a possible new WKRP station; both 1360 and 1530 are owned by Iheart. Iheart would also have more financial resources than other local radio groups to purchase/license a future WKRP entity. Just dreaming, though...

I wonder if the WKRP calls are a little too close to WKRC here in Cincinnati, a heritage station that brands itself as 55KRC. Might iHeart take issue with that? Unless of course it is they who will be taking on the call sign. And of course there’s WKRQ, but they don’t brand themselves with their call letters.

I'd say music as well for a WKRP 1530, representative of the era the fictional WKRP played. Neither WCKY or WSAI are doing well ratings-wise, at least in the overall Nielsen numbers. The sports fomats of 1360 and 1530 could be combined into one outlet and continue on either 1360 or 1530. Whether the average radio listener would be willing to listen to such a station long term, even given the novelty and nostalgia of such a venture...
The sports audience doesn't give a flying freak about a sitcom that's close to 50 years old.
Gary Sandy lives in Northern Kentucky and has a lot of involvement in his native Dayton now, he could drive a short distance and he'd likely do it. .Also could be one of the Oasis stations.

Now, if we include the cast of the 2 season sequel "The New WKRP in Cincinnati", we could include French Stewart and Mykelti Williamson, and maybe a few others. However, how many remember this follow up? Even though it was a shorter 35 years ago than the original. The best part was bringing back Dr. Johnny Fever in the 2nd season. Alas, a case of too little too late to save the show, and then being reduced to the overnight shift!Also could be one of the Oasis stations.

I remember the episode where Johnny leaves and comes back but lands on overnight fill to be the 2-parter from the original series.. (Johnny's replacement is taking cocaine in exchange for playing a sleazy record promoter's records...Johnny comes back after being fired in LA as "Heavy Early"). In the reboot, I seem to remember Johnny coming back as a consultant. Tim Reid's Venus came for a visit and was President of BET.

You got that episode mostly right, except that Johnny Caravella adopted the "Heavy Early" name when he came back to 'KRP after being fired in L.A.
Right, that's the episode I was referring to (the two parter when Johnny leaves. then comes back and fills in for the never-seen Mosh Steiger. This is the episode where Carlson says "there's a monkey on my foot"
I thought he adopted a girl who turned out to have an identical twin sister.
What makes no sense is he raised the fun-loving one and the other one was raised by someone irresponsible and still turned out to be smart and serious.

The writers had Moss Steiger, the overnight DJ die in the second season. That's when Dr. Johnny Fever returned as the overnight DJ. I watched an episode on You Tube where he was talked into staying up on a billboard for a number of days for a station promotion. Thank god they don't do that anymore!
