1110 New Format

Back to topic: Any chance U1 is trying to wrestle back the Carolina Panthers radio rights from IHeart, then simulcasting WFNZ on 1110? NFL + NBA (Hornets) provides local/regional "daily content" from August thru April. Maybe tack on MRN/NASCAR too, to cover summer. When you have conflicts, you can split the AM and FM, even could bleed off NASCAR or NBA to WBT-FM on weekends of triple-conflict. Seems expanding Carolina Sports beyond the Charlotte Metro using AM to reach beyond 60 miles with some good regional marketing might be an option.

The station used to play country and night and truckers are said to like country.
I don't remember WBT playing country at night, but, when I lived in Richmond, VA WRVA did. 50,000 watts, they had a studio in Jarrell's Truck Stop in Doswell. Think the announcer was named John. The Times Dispatch did a story with a picture and he was playing 45's on air. Was probably in the late 1970's. John used to say something like pulling for the American and Canadian trucker.

There just aren't many memorable drivers and "fan favorites" anymore. The 2004 Daytona 500 had nearly 18 million viewers on NBC and was won by Dale Jr. But even with streaming, Fox only pulled 7.5 million for the 2026 Daytona 500.

The days of Jimmie Johnson, Gordon, Junior, Kenseth, Elliott, Labonte and Rusty are long gone.

Meanwhile, we're getting closer to 100 days of stunting on 1110 khz. Blows me away...no one would have predicted over 3 months of lounge music.

NASCAR has been losing fans for awhile:
Meanwhile the series now known as the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series was up 17 percent from 2024 to 2025. Those races are all on over the air CW network.

The Observer used to print lists of radio stations broadcasting events and talk shows. Now they don't.

So it is completely meaningless when they tell people how to listen to a race and say it's on MRN.

Back when I was a kid, our paper (I believe The Greensboro News and Record) used to periodically print a list of local radio stations, giving pertenant info, including frequency, COL, format, etc. I first discovered that in the third grade, through my Braillest (sp) transcribing it for me, loved that list!

Is it just me, or is that the weakest 50K? I mean, all due respect, but seemed like it didn't get out too good to me, living in the NC Piedmont. WWVA, seemed to get out a lot better. Can't remember, was 'BAG in Burlington 24hr? Just thinking out loud.

Charlotte not having a NASCAR radio affiliation is wild. They were on WSOC-FM as far back as the early 70s. Just throwing that on 1110 would bring in listeners.

I remember them being on 'SOCFM. Yeah, it's strange, especially since they've got a track and all.

I used to read it when it had those lists.

The mecklenberg county records for the AM tower site comes back to Lincoln financial

BUT guess where the address comes back to? Beasley.

There was a lincoln financial media company of florida.. but that traced back to audacy.

Beasley has been very active in shutting down AMs to sell off real estate under towers. They’ve even taken dark a few smaller FMs to sell the towers to one of the big tower companies which lease space to cellular and a few broadcasters. Only option makes sense why they left the market but kept that site.

I predict the same fate for the BBN 930 site. Nice level lot for those three towers surrounded by industrial buildings.
