Salem cancels KTNO 620

Salem has filed a cancellation notice for KTNO 620. Guess there were no potential buyers or program clients. One of the better AM signals in DFW; demonstrates the state of AM radio these days.

First Dallas Media might be annoyed they didn’t go after 620 instead of the 770 license which didn’t have a transmitter site.

If the 620 towers remain in place, could KAMM re-engineer them for 1540?

Sad indeed.

Define "go after". It was donated to the organization, likely to offset taxes due from the sale of the transmitter site land.

620 has had technical issues for some time. Last year or maybe the year before it several of the five towers collapsed. They have been limping along with STAs since then.

Salem has apparently decided the land is the valuable asset and the license is not. 620 is still on the air as of midday today (04/10), but I would guess it will be off the air by Monday and the land is probably already sold, with the towers coming down soon.

Good point, had forgotten about the donation aspect.

Had forgotten about that as well. KNTO is a station I’ve pretty much ignored. The last time I really sampled 620 was during the KAAM incarnation.

The 620 transmitter site is on the bleeding edge of rapid DFW urban sprawl, so likely quite valuable for redevelopment. Salem appears to be content with having just The Answer and The Word formats in its various markets.

Wasn't that the move in from Wichita Falls? The former KMKI.

Interesting nerdy site note... when it was KMKI, I found the public file on the same floor where the music network studios were on Montfort Drive in Dallas. That, ironically happened, the last day that building was in use for any radio operations.

Of the five towers three were used day and night. A fourth was day only, the fifth was night only.

I checked Google Earth images of the KTNO tower site. You can easily see two collapsed towers on the ground, the NW and SW sticks in the array. Next to the transmitter building where a third collapsed tower was, the sections have been moved and laid on the ground side by side.

It might've been one of the better AM signals in DFW, but it was never sufficient to cover all of DFW 24/7.

I agree it's sad to see it go, but it always did more to service its community when it was KWFT in Wichita Falls. Of course, it left Wichita Falls because, even with decent numbers, making money in that market was difficult, and being an also-ran in DFW was more lucrative.

As land prices skyrocket, the AMs are just not valuable as a broadcaster. I am surprised 1190 has not sold their land. The night 12 tower array has to be a valuable piece of property unless it is located in the hood or a swamp.

The KTNO license was officially cancelled by the FCC this morning……..

…….However KTNO is still on the air at a 9:50am check today, as heard on a DFW area SDR.🤔🤨
