Interested in a radio station management game?

Indeed!

I tried another scenario: An all-news FM in LA in 1970.

It was brutal, and I ended up being bought out in '75 and left with nothing.

However, I was able to rebuild a beautiful music station in the 80s, then flip it to news-talk in the early 90s. Now I have the #3 news talker in LA (it had been #1 for a long time as an AM-FM simulcast until I sold the AM and went FM only) with almost $700 Million in cash!

Some new features for beta-testers: Listener feedback and more comprehensive consultant research! It's under the RESEARCH button. I also toughened the AI competition, revised the simulcast and LMA rules to be truer to history. I'm updating the Facebook page with all the latest features. If you want to beta-test this game, please drop me a message here!

Sounds like fun; i'm a radio and TV history buff(as well as a fan of sports video/computer games; i've had a Super Nintendo, Playstation, PlayStation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox One, and now a PlayStation 5, and most of the games i've gotten for them have been Madden, NCAA Football, NBA, NHL, etc.)...

If an option for the Seattle-Tacoma market(as that is the one I live in) ever gets added, I wouldn't mind trying it out...

top 3 stations, $418m in the bank. Spring 2026;
The Atlanta Spring 2026 numbers are in, and it is a dominant showing for the Spanish language side of the dial. WMGA-FM (La Mega 92.3) sits comfortably atop the market with a massive 13.2 share. While the station is locked in with talent extensions for Cristina Mills, the numbers suggest the programming is hitting the mark regardless of the paperwork. WUMA-FM (WUMA 107.1) follows in second place, posting a 9.6 share as Devon Roberts and Quincy Black settle in for the long haul on three-year extensions.

In the sports arena, WFAN-FM (The Fan 101.5) is carrying a heavy workload with broadcast rights for the Fire Ants, Peach Pit Crew, Hoop Snakes, and Ice Weasels. Despite the massive sports slate and recent extensions for Stu Nichols and Janet Cobb, the station saw a slight dip, slipping two tenths of a share to a 7.5. It is a reminder that even a loaded rights portfolio cannot always insulate a station from the volatility of the sports calendar.

The rest of the field shows a mix of stability and minor movement. WHNU-FM (Vibe 101.5) edged up a tenth of a share to a 5.5, while WGHI-FM (Party 103.3) saw a similar bump of two tenths to land at a 5.3. On the downside, WPDR-FM (Rhythm 102.3) fell two tenths to a 4.8, and WYBP-FM (Throwback 96.1) slipped a tenth to a 4.4. In the AM space, WUBV-AM (Blitz 640) managed to climb a tenth of a share to 1.7, while WMFA-FM (Country 96) also gained a tenth to reach 1.6.

NEW FEATURE Campaign mode! You're a general manager in Nashville. Can you turn around the company's station there? Maybe you'll get promoted! See how far you can go up the ladder! Check it out and let me know what you think (lots of other improvements, too)!

brian, is multiplayer open for beta testers? i created a room, it gave me an access code... but where does a 2nd person enter that code in order to play?
Hey there... It is open for testing. The room/code system works. You'll have to arrange with someone to be on at the same time as you, give them the code, have them "Join Room" and they'll enter the code. Feel free to get some friends in there as beta testers and try it out!

Once this is site is public and we (hopefully) have more concurrent users, we can set up rooms that players can join without needing to arrange it individually with someone.

This dropped while I was out of the country and I forgot about it until I saw a Facebook ad yesterday.

I've just spent waayyyy too much time with it. That's not a knock against the game...it's addictive.

I did the tutorial Atlanta scenario, then signed up and did a couple of Los Angeles 1970-2020 scenarios. Did well---last time around I ended up with an AM/FM talk simulcast, an FM CHR and an FM Urban Contemporary all at a 6.0 or above and all making money. Started with $20 million and a low rated AM and an even lower rated FM and ended up with $962 million cash on hand.

There are a few unrealistic things in the simulation---the first time around, it was forever before FM CHRs and Country stations showed up in Atlanta, and L.A. seemed very resistant to Soft AC and Alternative (which KOST and KROQ did very well with in real life).

What IS accurate is that consistency pays off (as long as there's a business case for the format you're attempting)---and you absolutely have to have healthy programming and promotion budgets or someone else will eat your lunch.

It's pretty much what I've been asking for here on RD for 20-plus years...a place where people can try out their ideas (to an extent) without costing people their jobs and benefits.

I have an idea!

Let's make playing this game a prerequisite to being allowed to comment on how radio stations out here in the real world are managed!

You may want to play it before you make that deal, K.M. There are absolutely flaws. I'm doing a simulation for San Francisco right now that has a Country FM number 1 in 1977.
Which stands out because Country has never really been a strong format for SF.

At least, I assume so. I've read comments to that effect, so I'm inclined to believe it's true.

Of course, that's The Present. I haven't the foggiest notion about what the market was like in 1977 (more than a decade before my time), though your allusion suggests that Country wasn't a popular format then, either.

Maybe a good way to think about this game is as an alternate reality-based what if?

About the best Country did before 1980 was 8th or 9th place on KNEW (910) AM. And that was a good book. A lot of the time, it was more like 15th or 16th.

And FM, regardless of format was tricky in San Francisco because of terrain before the widespread use of phase lock tuning. In 1978, only three of the top ten stations were FM---KIOI, which was A/C, KFOG and KOIT, which were beautiful music.

When FM became dominant, KSAN, which went Country in the fall of 1980, was top ten more often than not, but that's a long way from #1 in 1977.

That would make the game worse than useless. No, the way it responds to the inputs I make for my own stations is logical and rational (for the most part), but it seems to be a little fuzzy on the landscape around me (I've only tried single-player mode). This was clearly put together by someone with an understanding of the business---but all the bugs haven't been worked out and since this appears to be heavily AI-driven, they may not be able to be worked out.

It's early yet. And the signup promises e-mail updates about revisions and updates.

Flaws or not, it would give the armchair quarterbacks some much-needed education about radio station management before they start criticizing moves made by stations and dissing those here who have hands-on knowledge.
