Buddy, what does your rating research show? How far off are the Nielsen numbers? So why not do a side-by-side comparison so we all know the REAL numbers. I'm sure all who post on this board would appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I cannot share numbers. The ones you are seeing are a very poor representation of the market. No station should be exempted from market ratings, as that does not give a truly accurate view of what is going on.

I can tell you this. Nothing much has changed. No station took a huge hit, and no station took a dramatic rise.

I do know that satellite radio has double digits when it comes to market share.

I also know that share numbers for terrestrial radio are falling. Lots of total shares from 2.0-6.0 range. A few about that. Even those stations are not owning the share.

These all depends who gets a diary. If you don’t get one, your listening does not count.

More and more stations care less about ratings, more and more advertisers care less about ratings.

National agencies care about them, but national agency business in radio has dropped dramatically. They have no faith in radio

So, how should the market react to clients, by not using ratings? Sell direct with result oriented conversations, then make those conversations come to fruition on your station.

There will always be 100 "share" numbers as "share" is defined as a percentage of radio listening. Even if only one listener is left, that person will contribute 100 shares.

I think you mean "rating". The rating of radio (Persons Using Mass Media per Nielsen) used to be around 20% of all people listening 6 AM to Midnight, Now it is around 5% in most markets.

Bravo! That is why not every discussion of local radio has to be based on ratings and share and cume. As one smaller market owner once told me, "the best ratings come from the cash registers at your client's businesses."
