Oregon KPAM The Answer moves to 1640 AM

So, KPAM moves from 860 kHz, 50Kw days, 15kW nights to 1640 kHz 10kW days, 1kW nights. The only reason I can think of for doing this is so that they don't have to worry about the 6 towers that allow KPAM to run 15kW at night. And that makes me wonder if 1) the KDZR and KPAM towers are at separate locations; and, if so, 2) is Salem selling the land under which the KPAM towers stand.

KDZR and KPAM are using two different tower sites.
860 KPAM is four towers on seven acres of property, although there is a church adjacent which could contribute an additional two acres.

1640 is diplexing with KPDQ 800 in southwest Portland. 860 is east of Vancouver, where it presumably diplexes with 1550, although the latter hasn't seen the light of day for some time.

860 KPAM Land was sold and is becoming more zero lot line homes.

I'm sure the land for residential development in a growing city like Portland is too valuable to use for radio towers, a story we see repeated in many markets these days. Out of curiosity, what are "zero lot line homes"?

And I guess the KPAM call letters will be transferred to 1640? Or will Salem even bother since the station calls itself "The Answer" and rarely uses its call sign?

Salem has an interesting line up of five stations in the Portland market:

--KPDQ-FM 93.9, running Salem's primary format, Brokered Religion.
--KPDQ "True Talk 800", with an alternate Christian Talk and Teaching format, some of the same shows as KPDQ-FM but at different times.
--KPAM Troutdale "The Answer 860", carrying Conservative Talk but likely will be silenced.
--93.1 "El Rey" (The King) KRYP Gladstone, airing Regional Mexican music. While it only is powered at 1,600 watts, it's on a fairly tall tower, same height as most of Portland's 100,000 watt FM stations. While it's uncommon for Salem to own a Regional Mexican station, I think the company has one or two others.
--1640 KDZR, which also had played Regional Mexican music, I suppose as a simulcast of El Rey? But that's now the new home of The Answer.

The KPAM and KDZR calls were legally swapped a few weeks ago. 1640 is now KPAM Lake Osewego/Portland.

Zero lot tine homes usually have one side of the house build immediately on top of the property line, so there is no side yard on one side. Usually no windows on that side of hte house as well. Maximizes the number of homes you can place on a former AM radio array site. If the 860 signal ever comes back, it will be at greatly reduced power from another location in the market. Probably is not coming back.

Neither will be the 1550 noted in an earlier post.

I wonder if they got any calls or emails from listeners claiming their radio doesn't tune to 1640? Like stations that moved to the X-band back in the late 90s and early 2000s got.

Many pre-1990s radios and tuners won't tune up that far, particularly digitally tuned radios that top out at 1610 or 1620. Older manually tuned radios will usually reach up to 1630-1650 if you bury the needle at the top of the dial.

I heard 1640 KDZR here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area on early Friday morning with a dual KPAM/KDZR legal ID and Townhall news. I have heard 860 KPAM here multiple times in the past, usually best early in the morning just before sunrise here.

Interesting that you could get 860 KPAM in the Minneapolis area. You'd think KPAM would be nulled away from you, considering the station has to avoid interfering with CJBC Toronto, the Class I-A station on 860.

It's possible they were on their day power/pattern after dark the times I heard them. Also likely during enhanced conditions to the Pacific Northwest. We had good PNW conditions early last Friday morning when I heard 1640 KDZR, as I also heard 710 KIRO (Seattle, WA), 720 KFIR (Sweet Home, OR), 840 KKNX (Eugene, OR), and 1120 KPNW (Eugene, OR). Using my KiwiSDR and a 1m "Wellgood" amplified loop (based off the Wellbrook ALA-1530).

Not bad! KIRO in Minneapolis? And especially the KKNX catch...just awesome. Check 590 early mornings for KQNT Spokane. They should get out.

Are you sure it was the portland answer and not san francisco answer you had on 860?

One is 860 am the answer, one is am 860 the answer

590 KQNT, as well as 920 KXLY are both in the log. KQNT has become easier to hear with Omaha currently off the air. I was actually looking for 590 KCSJ (Pueblo, CO) last Friday morning when I heard KQNT come up and ID. That's when I jumped to look for a few targets I've been after from the PNW, such as 840 KKNX and 1640 KDZR.

It was via live DX while matching to a KiwiSDR out there. I've heard KTRB the same way. I'm pretty careful when targeting a station that I know there could be others airing the same network or program. 840 KKNX (Eugene, OR) airs the same network as 840 KSWB (Seaside, OR), but KSWB has a varying delay compared to KKNX. KKNX can be heard on the Creswell, OR Kiwis. You can hear (at least on that day and at that time) both KSWB and KKNX swapping places on the KiwiSDR near Redding, CA. I last heard 860 KPAM on 8-25-2025, just before 4am CDT. That same morning of 8-25 I also heard 570 KVI (Seattle, WA) and 1190 KEX (Portland, OR). I last noted KTRB (San Francisco, CA) on 2-17-2024 at just before 2am CST. Possible I heard them other times since, but didn't mark them down as it would be a relog.

860 CJBC (Toronto, ON) normally has a local-like signal here at night. It seems like 860 KKOW (Pittsburg, KS) has become much easier to hear over the past few years too.
