One more update. The guaranteed human ID may have been updated to a new classic rock version. So far there playing Pearl Jam. So this is very developing. And they’re on their two for Tuesday. So IDK if it’s only classic rock or mainstream or active it has it
Plus some of iHeart’s old classic rock stations went to classic hits like (KGB Big 105.9 Miami, 93.7 the river Sacramento) wonder if this is a corporate decision get rid of classic in the name because Z93.3 Hudson valley also has a new logo and says “Rocks the Hudson valley”iHeart's Classic Rock KGB in San Diego is now positioned as "80's, 90's, and more". KIOZ is already "Rocks San Diego". I'm wondering the reasoning behind eliminating the word "Classic". Negative audience perception?
KGB-FM, WBGG, and KYRV did NOT go Classic Hits. They simply repositioned away from marketing as "Classic Rock" much in the way the other stations are now. They're trying to get younger as they move into the late 90s and early 2000s musically.Plus some of iHeart’s old classic rock stations went to classic hits like (KGB Big 105.9 Miami, 93.7 the river Sacramento) wonder if this is a corporate decision get rid of classic in the name because Z93.3 Hudson valley also has a new logo and says “Rocks the Hudson valley”
I can only speak for KYRV, and while I haven't researched the playlist extensively it seems like more of what they're playing now was played on the CHR stations back in the day, at the expense of the formerly AOR tracks. The liners now say "Sacramento's greatest hits" instead of "Sacramento's rock station". The Journey, Boston, and Billy Idol are still there, but what they play are the songs that were hits, and it seems like the Judas Priest and the periodic "Dazed & Confused" from Led Zeppelin are gone. I get the Zeppelin though - it's older.KGB-FM, WBGG, and KYRV did NOT go Classic Hits. They simply repositioned away from marketing as "Classic Rock" much in the way the other stations are now. It almost like The River went back to the music they were playing when they were Jack-FM, sort of.The River has an approach that is similar to The Jet in Seattle. They play a wide variety from Buffalo Springfield to Michael Jackson It works, as they are highly rated in the market.

I would agree with that. There also seems to be a consistency problem where they lean more rock one hour and the lean more pop the next.I think we can say KYRV has moved to that territory that's halfway between Classic Hits and Classic Rock. I just checked the playlist for the last couple of hours, Sunday evening May 3. Every song could have been played on an Album Rock station from 20-30 years ago, except one, Michael Jackson "Smooth Criminal." I see Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, ZZ Top, Billy Joel. Yes, a few could be classified as artists that might have been played on some AOR stations but not on others: Thompson Twins, George Harrison, B-52s, Hall & Oates.
I can think of stations like this that do very well. KOFX is always #1 in El Paso. It gets listed as Classic Hits but it never plays Whitney Houston, Madonna or Gloria Estefan. I don't even think it plays Michael Jackson or Prince. Maybe once in a while. WSRV Atlanta is like this too. It also calls itself Classic Hits but doesn't sound like WCBS-FM or KRTH. It is a Classic Rock station that doesn't lean too hard.
Considering there is no Adult Hits in Sacramento, they might be trying to fill that format hole.It almost like The River went back to the music they were playing when they were Jack-FM, sort of.
Talk about timing...this article from Sean Ross delves into the reasoning behind the abandonment of "Classic" from positioning for rock stations.Plus some of iHeart’s old classic rock stations went to classic hits like (KGB Big 105.9 Miami, 93.7 the river Sacramento) wonder if this is a corporate decision get rid of classic in the name because Z93.3 Hudson valley also has a new logo and says “Rocks the Hudson valley”
