A telephone quality sound

Wednesday evening, 04/22/2026 after 8:00 p.m., AM1420 WHK has a low level and tinny sound. In the car, WHK wasn't much better than two stations that were interfering with them. In my house, the interference on a little table-top radio was not as bad, but WHK's sound was. It sounded like I was listening to the station over my telephone. I wonder if they are doing some sort of work on the transmission, and choose evenings, after sundown, to do it.

I wonder why you don’t contact the station and ask them what’s going on.
Because at this stage in the broadcast industry, there's probably NOBODY there at the station to answer a phone, email, ouija board or a scream in their general direction. If there's is a phone in the place it's probably shoved in a closet somewhere in the basement where no one can hear it ringing because it's muffled under 15 pounds of spider webs.

WHK, as evidence by its ratings (if you can find them) is not a listener priority station. It is simply a setup to clear Salem's network programming into another market. Not surprising that between this fact and the trend for broadcast radio to cut employees and have a now limited staff of engineers trying to handle several stations or even multiple markets so all kinds of stuff falls through the cracks.

Occasionally in the evening when they lose the feed from the network, WHK starts playing instrumental Beatles music until the connection is restored. It actually sounds pretty good.

Could it have sounded like a telephone line because of a fallback STL utilizing actual POTS being engaged?

It's not impossible to believe a 5 kW religious station on 1420 wouldn't settle for temporary telco grade audio in the event of its primary and possibly secondary high fidelity links failing.

WHK is a News/Talk station with some of the talk being Christian oriented.

With so much computerization and remote operation of modern broadcast outlets I doubt there is any local control at a station like WHK.
Old time images of a minimum wage board op sitting in town and monitoring the station are becoming quaint and outdated. There is so much in the cloud accessed from anywhere in the world, there is no one "here" to attend to a problem. Perhaps someone cares about how they sound, but they have to accept the economic realities of today. Listen to the podcast.

They clearly have studios because thre are some local/brokered shows that also take calls

They can do a show and take calls from their bedrooms if they have the right set up.
I have no idea if they do that there but it's done all the time and if done right you'll never know it.

You might if they start yelling "Ralphie! Ralphie don't pee on the bedpost! And you damn kids, I'm doing radio take the damn dog outside and quit making so much noise!"

I believe Jake is doing his show from the studio. Bob Frantz was doing his show at home.
