WDLW interesting plays

This morning, 04/20/2026, in the 7:00 a.m. hour, "Kool Kat Oldies", WDLW AM 1380 played some interesting songs. When I first tuned in, they were playing what I think was Santana's version of "Spooky", originally done by The Classics IV. They followed that up with "Bitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones!

How times have changed. When The Ramones were new, you'd only hear them on college radio stations run by students.

WDLW seems to have gone in a more Album Rock direction.

That was probably the Atlanta Rhythm Section's 1979 remake of "Spooky." It got airplay nationally, topping out at No. 17. I've heard it on oldies/classic hits stations a few times in recent years, including local WFYX Walpole, NH, before the station was flipped to more advertiser-appealing Hot AC a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the correction. Santana had a hit with "Stormy", a "Spooky" sound-alike song also originally done by The Classics IV.

while not a Ramones fan...glad to hear WDLW is willing to break free of the steady diet of John Mellancamp...Journey...Queen that so many stations offer to surprise listeners with something unexpected!

I'd be more interested to hear who is advertising on them. I assume they would be sold in combo with WOBL, a long established station there and has to have picked up audience and advertising with the demise of WEOL. It still has to be a struggle.

Blitzkrieg Bop is a 50 year old song, so it certainly qualifies as an oldie. What has helped the popularity of the song is its usage at baseball parks. Most parks use the opening riff: "Hey Ho, Let's Go" to motivate the crowd and get them excited when a home team batter is at the plate. So now just about everyone knows the riff. Few people know the rest of the song.

They have an online stream if you really want to know

I'd rather hear their "I Wanna Be Sedated" instead. The most surprising place I ever heard that song wasn't on a radio station but at Fenway Park in Boston, being played by the ballpark keyboardist before a Rays-Red Sox game in 2007!

Because of an amalgam of high fees and clearance permissions, what is on a station stream is not always the same as what is over the air, ads included.
From what I've heard when I've been up listening OTA in Lorian country versus streaming here at home, it's pretty similar

Also if you check their Facebook page they post all the businesses advertising during the Guardians games.

Age of a song doesn't qualify it. I like the song, belongs on rock station. The texture of it dictates that. IMO, WDLW trying to be everything to everyone, which usually doesn't work. IF IT is, cool.
