Sports to replace KNX News simulcast at 97.1 FM

Nights? Weekends?
I'd bet dollars to donuts that'll be covered by Westwood One Sports talk. Maybe one or two local shows on the weekends (not counting the likely time buys of "The Doctor Sports Sport Medicine Show" or "Home Equity Wealth Management Hour... plus Sports!")

I'm betting (no pun intended), there will be at least some hours of sports betting.

Yeah... while I'd rather they pull from WW1S I wouldn't be surprised if they take from BetMGM. Perhaps the fact that sports gambling is still technically illegal here might dictate what they choose to air.

BetMGM was folded into Westwood One Sports at its launch this past December. No longer a separate network.
Woof... I stand corrected. At least in terms of weekdays, it looks like The Fan could take Drake Toll 3-6am, the back half of BetMGM Tonight from 6-8pm, and then Westwood One Sports Night 8pm-midnight. WW1S re-airs the last 3 hours of Sports Night before Drake Toll to cover overnights, so I'm guessing The Fan will just air that as well from midnight-3a

The Westwood One Sports Network is a shell of its former self as CBS Sports radio and the Infinity Sports Network. They actually used to talk about sports all throughout the night with Bart Winkler and the Good Shepard. Now it’s mostly all gambling talk and that doesn’t do anyone in California much good since it’s still illegal here.

I understand the station needs to make money but if you’re trying get listeners to sample or try a new radio station 30 minute paid infomercials is a likely turnoff to the new listeners you are trying to attract.

I’ll give it a chance. But, no Jim Rome?! Not even for an hour? Big mistake
I used to listen to Jim Rome back in the day and enjoyed the show a lot. But over the years the show became less entertaining because he let a certain cadre of listeners with over-inflated egos with five minute diatribe calls take over the show. The Smack Off (does he still do that? ), which started out as being a fun, entertaining way of showing off the best callers turned into a mess of increasingly over rehearsed frantic speeches with insider jokes that only every-day listeners can get and lame call-outs to other callers. In short,, it just became so juvenile.

Then there is Jim who touts all of he great interviews he has lined up for the day. "We have the inside tackle for the Denver Broncos!'" (Whoo-hoo, I guess) and then starts out each interview with the highly inquisitive "How you feelin'?" as he tries to bond with an athlete he has never met who his producer managed to book that morning.

I am not completely down on Jim; when he brings his A-game, he is well researched and has great, entertaining takes and I enjoy hearing them. It's just that when I left off several years ago, he wasn't bringing the A-game material nearly enough any more and the tired schtick was getting really... tiring.

Was Jim ever big in LA proper? Reading up, I see him having a former home base in San Diego before being syndicated. I guess Audacy sees him hanging up the headphones (or them booting him from WW1S) in a soon enough window to not want to make him a face of this new endeavor.

As for weekend pay-to-play shows, I think more first impressions will come from major weekday dayparts, and very few from 1pm on a Saturday.

And regarding the launch date, it seems all the new hosts making social media posts are saying the station is launching May 18th. I don’t know if this means KNX still gets the boot on the 11th and they run WW1S for a week, or if the whole flip has been pushed back.

Just wait til you find out about “Parody Larry” and his song contributions to Rome’s show…. War Terrence in Sierra Madre!

I’m not sure if KNX ever had regular sports reports like KFWB did or KCBS currently does — both at :15 and :45 past every hour. KNX used to have a sports anchor weekday mornings until 2021.
They once had sports twice an hour in all day parts. By 2016, it was down to weekdays, daytime hours with a morning and afternoon anchor.
Afternoon anchor Steve Grad was laid off in late 2016, and sports dropped to AM drive only, until dropped in 2021.

I feel like Audacy really chose to put sports on 97.1 in case The Fan massively flops they can quietly return KNX to the signal without any issues. I don’t think it’ll fail. But I can also see it having a slow start

Romey never read my takes back in the day but I still listened, until Chael Sonnen won the Smack Off.
I quit listening when he started to pretend to like soccer. I am sure his bosses told him to for $$ reasons, but still.

Having a host pretend to be a pro seriously covering the sport he had been (appropriately) bashing for the previous 20 years and clearly knew nothing about felt way too fake for me. I had to give Jim the dreaded "buzzer".

CF was out.
