Sports to replace KNX News simulcast at 97.1 FM

The Westwood One Sports Network is a shell of its former self as CBS Sports radio and the Infinity Sports Network. They actually used to talk about sports all throughout the night with Bart Winkler and the Good Shepard. Now it’s mostly all gambling talk and that doesn’t do anyone in California much good since it’s still illegal here.
Not true- they have live host overnights, Josh Graham and Linnell Williingham who know sports. There is NO gambling talk

Overnights are mostly a mix of sports/general talk, which is MUCH preferable to gambling talk (though I still miss Amy Lawrence), but they’re only live for half the night. I feel like I already knew that but had it confirmed while listening in bed late one night last week and hearing them talk about a basketball game that “just went final”. They’re only live until 3am eastern.

Yeah I dont get the sudden love of gambling and sports- I get its all about money but they need to be kept seperate. Its a Pandoras Box being opened when gambling became the mainstream

Yeah I dont get the sudden love of gambling and sports-

It's about demographics:

The survey data shows that those betting on sports span all age groups, though they over-index toward younger adults. Four out of 10 (43%) sports bettors were individuals under 35 years of age compared to 25% for the total survey. In contrast, only 24% of sports bettors were 55 years of age and older, whereas this age group represented 43% of the overall survey. Over two-thirds (68%) were men compared to 46% for the total survey.

More talk about betting can drive down the average age of the audience. However, the sports talk radio audience tends to be older than sports betters.

Yes, very true! I mean fantasy football is gambling and when I was in various leagues I would pay more attention. Stopped doing it when it became less fun and a full time job

In a related way, there's a lot of activity in the "prediction markets."

Platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket let users bet on future events—elections, treaties, economic indicators, or even military agreements—without a fixed “house” setting odds
For example, a market might resolve whether the U.S. and Iran will agree to a permanent peace deal by a set date, with “Yes” if a qualifying agreement is reached by 11:59 PM ET on that date

It's not sports, but world events. It might become a topic in news talk radio, but the audience is likely way too old for it.

As I mentioned previously on post #53, those with HD car radios will still be able to hear KNX on FM at 97.1 HD2
What percentage of car radios can pick up HD? My previous Toyota came with SXM and HD. The current one only receives SXM (not HD) along with FM and AM? How many buyers are going to go out of their way to buy a car with an HD-receiver?

I’ll give it a chance. But, no Jim Rome?! Not even for an hour? Big mistake
The big market sports stations don't run any syndicated national shows in the daytime, not even Jim Rome or Jim Patrick. And they don't delay them for airing later, since what they discuss may be outdated by then. Even when CBS owned both the radio stations and the CBS Sports Radio Network, it didn't require the local stations to air the national shows.

And I don't think you're going to hear infomercials either. Again, Audacy is investing a lot in having a top notch Sports Radio station on FM in Market #2. If it's like the other big market Audacy stations like WINS NYC, WSCR Chicago, WIP Philadelphia and WEEI Boston, management isn't going to mess with success. Currently WINS and WIP are all live and local around the clock except a few hours on weekends. Local is paramount.

But the stations DID run his daily :60 commentary. Which makes me wonder if Rome will be a regular guest on the station. That way he makes an appearance, but isn't chained to the console for a 4 hour shift.

Mornings and middays look solid. But the afternoons look pretty meh. Two bloggers are going up against Mason and Ireland as well as Petros and Money? Good luck! I can’t remember sports on LA morning drive being local since The Beast. They’ll win in mornings. Alex Curry is very entertaining on Fox Sports Radio and is a great fill in on The Herd

How much will this impact KSPN ? Will it pose a greater challenge to their trailblazing "no Neilsen" sales approach?

Keep in mind there are other ways to get audience usage data besides Nielsen, but those other ways aren't public. So they have usage data.

Will having a third sports talk station affect them? It depends on how good the new hosts are. People tend to be loyal to certain hosts, so having new hosts won't affect them.

However, it's possible the new station will affect other male-oriented formats, such as rock. We've seen in other cities that during certain times of the year, sports listening goes up, and rock listening goes down.

Good Karma sells sports marketing, not radio spots. They sell a package of multiple sports tie-ins, such as in-stadium and the like.

So is tomorrow the launch date or the 18th?

Audacy has set the launch lineup for Sports “97.1 The‍ Fan” KNX-FM Los Angeles when‌ it launches on Monday, May‍ 11.

https://x.com/TheFanLA/with_replies

and

along with Social Media for the individual hosts were all edited on 5/5/2026
promoting 5/18/2026 as the launch date (as @Jstnpspck mentioned in a previous post):
And regarding the launch date, it seems all the new hosts making social media posts are saying the station is launching May 18th. I don’t know if this means KNX still gets the boot on the 11th and they run WW1S for a week, or if the whole flip has been pushed back.
