Sports to replace KNX News simulcast at 97.1 FM

I’d need someone still working to answer that, but I don’t think you can single-line streaming…it would artificially inflate commercial values for air on a platform advertisers don’t pay as much for.
Unless a station opts out, streaming audience is included in all ratings published by Nielsen. Audacy was one of the few that split its streaming numbers from its broadcast feeds until TLR'ing them again in late 2025.

In the December monthly for example, KNX AM/FM had a 4.2 share. The stream had a 0.3.

A handful of stations had significant streaming audiences. In October 2025, 94.1 WIP Philadelphia had a 9.2 share during the Phillies play-off run and Eagles season in progress. WIP's stream added an additional 3.2 share.

Cox Media Group still splits its streams separately for most of its stations along with a handful of smaller mostly non-comms, but for the most part every station's measurement includes AM, FM and streaming listenership.

You're wrong.

It was said by the KNX voiceover artist on the video touting the launch of the FM simulcast!
No, it was not.

The phrasing was:

“For 100 years, you listened to KNX 1070. And just like the news changes every day, we’re about to change now, and for the next 100 years. You’re about to hear KNX in a whole new way—-static free at 97.1 FM—and available everywhere.”

There was no promise of being on a frequency or even a band for 100 years. The promise was change—-evolution with times and tech.

I will agree to disagree.

To me, that verbiage suggests KNX news programming will be heard on 97.1 FM for the next 100 years.

At minimum, the message is open to interpretation.

Please 'splain who is going to listen to Sportsradio 97.1 when the Dodgers and/or Angels are playing?
Me, one thousand percent me. I'm a transplant (as are quite a few other folks in the Los Angeles region if I'm not mistaken) and I am thrilled at the prospect of another (FM quality!) sports talk option when local play-by-play is on 570 or 710

Also, who is going to land the Westwood One affiliation?
In terms of marquee games-of-the-week, I believe iHeart has those in LA, and they're divvied up between the various AM properties depending on conflicts (the only time I have or will ever be listening to "The Patriot" is for football). I don't know how often the contract is renegotiated but iH had them as of last year. It'd be a pretty great get if Audacy could swing it.

Plus, in cars (40% or more of your audience), more and more models don't even have the ability to pick up AM at all.
As of right now, that is such a tiny percentage that it is immaterial..
This will be an interesting gamble by Audacy; six to nine months from now, they'll see if they made a good or bad choice.
The choice was made based on revenue. The potential towards the future for sports is much greater than all news.
As for the FM, does Audacy expect to gain traction without a baseball team as its anchor? The Dodgers own 50% of 570AM. And the Angles own 830AM outright and license the broadcasts to 710AM to extend the broadcast range. Please 'splain who is going to listen to Sportsradio 97.1 when the Dodgers and/or Angels are playing?
There are other sports beyond baseball... and the whole format is basically "guy talk" and very acceptable to advertisers.

The fact is that we will know the answers to most of these questions tomorrow.

Earlier in this thread, I pointed out that Audacy and Good Karma have a business relationship in NYC. It's very possible they could do an FM deal for the teams Good Karma broadcasts on KSPN.

The stream for KNX-FM-97.1 is not yet running via the new website:

But, the direct streaming URL address for 128k MP3 is available and is currently running an introductory loop promoting the station's launch:

So this is what’s being heard on 97.1 right now?

I'd roughly say the same about KABC. In another market (Phoenix, where I now reside), the big reason that Bonnville flipped 98.7 KPKX to its current sports format was so that the complaints from KTAR-FM's news/talk listeners would stop when their programming was preempted by sports.
No, it was to have another revenue source. It was not over the loss of hard to sell talk programming to easy to sell play by play.
And I expect those kinds of complaints would show up if KABC decided to air national football league gamess, especially games not involving local teams.
KABC does not have enough listeners to have a tennis match, let alone complain.
Besides, there will now be four local (or relatively local) sports-formatted radio stations in the Los Angeles market: KNX-FM (the station this thread is dedicated to); KLAC, KSPN, and KLAA (It's licensed to Orange but puts a good signal into most of the Los Angeles market).
I'll remind you that the KFI transmitter site is just a mile or two from the Orange County border. The issue with KLAA is more about its directionality than its city of license.

So this is what’s being heard on 97.1 right now?
As of this posting, 97.1 is still KNX, though the HD2 is also broadcasting KNX with the HD3 as Firelane dance.

Also, knocking around the bits of the new website that are live, the "shows" page does list BetMGM Tonight and WW1 Sports Night, which would pad out 6-8 and 8-3am (if they air the Sports Night replay). Interesting they don't list the Drake Toll morning show (or overnight show on the West Coast), though giving him a listen last week, they may be better off airing prior day best-of leading into the local show at 6am. I was trying not to nod off on the treadmill as Toll was a bit too dull pace-wise for me.

It's sad if KLAA is still licensing KSPN to carry some of the Angels games. Whereas KLAA 830 is non-existent at night, here in the west SFV, KSPN 710 is barely adequate. At times the adjacent channel Salt Lake City's ESPN (KALL) 700 is much stronger.

97.1 HD2 is where you will still be able to listen to KNX on FM. They've quietly promoted this but certainly not enough.
