1110 New Format

I don't understand why I never heard a WRQK station ID when I was in college. I think there were three different stations, but WKZL and Z-93 were the only ones I ever heard a station ID for. I wasn't including WQMG. The guy across the hall liked to turn to that one and say, "Disco!"

'QMGT was Disco? I've heard that years ago, it was Easy Listening, but all the time I ever heard them, they were Urban. My daddy coached ball with a former DJ from there and he (Bill Weatherly) gave me several albums from that station and/or somewhere else. One was a Jackie Gleason (sp) and his Orchestra and two were sound effects albums, all long-gone now.

WCOG's "studio" is a computer in the WTOB production room. WCOG's towers are co-located with WWBG and there are multiple towers (both directional) along with WCOG's translator. WCOG's format is classic hits, I think it's by Westwood One. WWBG is a simulcast of WTOB, with studios on Trade St in Winston-Salem. WTOB's format is classic hits/oldies locally done, with live DJs.
Pretty sure Chimp wasn't talking about the Meadowview 950/98.7 tower site. WTOB's tower is a single stick near downtown Winston-Salem (980khz, the old WAAA frequency, rebuilt when George Buck bought it). Chimp might have been talking about the old WTOB site when they were on 1380 (now WWNT) it's in NW Winston-Salem, but more likely he was talking about the WCOG/WWBG site near Summerville, just north of GSO airport.

Roger on that. Wait, Summerville, north of GSO Airport? WWNT is now simulcasting with 'PET, according to Dave, just a while back.

I believe 'COG did have multiple towers, off-site, as well. Had an old dear friend (all due respect to him) who worked there back from like '54 to maybe like '59, then he went to 'PET, both mostly on the tech side of things. Don Harris told me (and some others via a tape he made) that 'COG was directional, even back in those days.
The building may have been abandoned, but it was next to the towers.
You know what their signoff was in those days? No, not The Star Spangled Banner, not that I heard on that tape anyway, it was The Lord's Prayer by Perry Como.
The local paper claimed that's how WGTL signed off each night (wasn't Como, but someone who sang opera style), and how it signed off for good when it had equipment problems. It was supposed to come back but the man was 78 and the building was torn down. Ironically, what they tore it don for was also torn down for a road project.

Edit: WTOB has a translator and tower on the roof of the Winston Tower (formerly the Wachovia Building) in downtown Winston-Salem.
You're in an entirely different city.

I thought WCOG was sports and simulcasting WSJS. Maybe someone can tell us.

WWBG is simulcasting WWNT which used to be WTOB.

I am very certain I was referring to WCOG's towers in Greensboro, but for some reason I thought PET and 98.7 were in the building. And now that I think of it, the building might have been empty.

Gotcha.

I remember 'GTL, fondly, always loved that little station, how sad.

You're in an entirely different city.
Now that's possible, Winston-Salem versus Greensboro.
I thought WCOG was sports and simulcasting WSJS. Maybe someone can tell us.
I believe 'COG is doing Oldies, with a translator on 105.3.

WWBG is simulcasting WWNT which used to be WTOB.
I don't think so. 'BG and the new 'TOB did simulcast at one point, but last time I heard them, I believe they were doing more separate programming these days. WWNT on 1380 is simulcasting WPET, AM 950 and FM 92.7 out of Greensboro.

Whenever it was, if it was 'PET and 'KSI, they were at 221 West Meadowview Road, although I remember hearing an old 'PET signon which said they were at 121 Meadowview Road.

Wikipedia does say this. WWBG has been simulcasting WTOB since 2020. This is the first I'm hearing about it.

And it has been separate from the old WTOB for more than a decade.

Wikipedia says WWNT is silent. Okay, that needs to be fixed, if we can find a source. But none of these changes were ever mentioned here.

Well, Wikipedia does say they've been doing it since 2021. I don't think it was ever mentioned here.

Roger on that. Not a big Wiki fan, but I'd say they're right on this one. Heard them the last time I was back in the area, (to quote Andy Griffith) it was back last October. Also Amos and I've discussed it via Conversation, as well.

Roger on that. Wait, Summerville, north of GSO Airport? WWNT is now simulcasting with 'PET, according to Dave, just a while back.
summerville, north of GSO airport, yes. WWNT is the "old" WTOB (1380) i was unaware they were simulcasting WPET, but it makes sense.
You're in an entirely different city.
Yes, that's why I mentioned the Summerville site of WCOG and WWGB.
I thought WCOG was sports and simulcasting WSJS. Maybe someone can tell us.

WCOG is Classic Hits, only simulcast is their translator @ 105.3. It did used to be sports simulcasting WSJS, but not for a couple of years.
WWBG is simulcasting WTOB (980) not WWNT. WWNT is, according to Josh, simulcasting WPET.

summerville, north of GSO airport, yes.
Now that's a new one on me.

WWNT is the "old" WTOB (1380) i was unaware they were simulcasting WPET, but it makes sense.
Yes and that they are. Back last October, when in the area, I heard them testing, with Southern Gospel music and after hearing a This Is The Truth (I believe that's all they said) liner, I called Truth to see what station it was. The receptionist told me the callsign, then (as Preacher said last night) a bell went off. Reckon, after they got the bugs worked out between the station and 'PET running only their local Cross liners (not 100.9's, oops), that's when they started the simulcast. WPET, is using The Cross branding now, along with Truth's first SGM station, 100.9, WSTS. Well, come to think of it, they also use it on AM 1090, out of Selma, too.

sorry Josh, it's not Summerville. it's Summerfield. My mistake. The WCOG, WWBG and W287GD (wcog's 105.3 translator) transmitters and towers are off of Willow Ridge Drive, in Summerfield.

Gotcha! I thought of Summerfield, but didn't say anything. I believe Summerfield is towards Rockingham County, north of Greensboro, Brown Summit, etc.

Oh and to further complicate the 'TOB, 'BG saga, wasn't 980 WEGO for a while, before it was 'TOB? Talk about the regional callsign shuffle!

Ancient history, that's of course, the old 'MDE/'RQK/KSI, up them curvy stairs from 'PET, which all used to be on Meadowview Road in Greensboro. Ain't that right, Amos?

Which one is that?
I was part of the Management Team (Sales Manager) at WKSI, we flipped it from WRQK in June 1985. Stan Thomas was GM, and our programming consultant was the late great Randy Kabrich.
