Las Vegas KJUL is not the same anymore :(

Tonight I heard Kris Kross - Jump on 104.7. I could not believe it! Had to double check my radio to make sure it wasn’t tuned to 105.7 instead of 104.7, and even tuned to other stations to make sure that it wasn’t glitching. Or that there was no tropo bringing in KOCP/KQIE to Vegas.
Lately KJUL changed its imaging to sound “aggressive” like a CHR. A lot more 90s classic hits. It’s not a soft AC anymore like the KJUL I fell in love with. There are so many 80s/90s soft AC hits that would have been a natural progression of the gold based soft AC format. It’s a rimshot, and should have a format that makes it worth listening through the static. I’m just glad that K272EE 102.3 is still oldies with the occasional 50s song.
I used to listen to KJUL for hours without changing the station, even fell asleep to it and streamed it when I was out of town. Nowadays, I barely listen to it.

I'm actually surprised KJUL is still around. The pandemic changed KJUL. When they came back on the air, after shutting down for several months due to financial issues, they dropped the on air staff and flipped to Adult Contemporary. I agree, as a rimshot they shouldn't try to compete with the big boys. Instead find a niche format, that no one else is doing, like Soft AC.

If your within the signal range, there is KIYQ-LP 107.1, which has an Adult Standards/Nostalgia format.

KJUL 'The Jewell' is no more They are now permanently simulcasting KOOL 102 (KQLL-AM and the 102.3 translator). Now branded as KOOL 102 and 104.7 FM. The 80's Classic Hits was The Jewel's last format.

KIYQ-LP 107.1 is off the air and has been canceled. The Comet CFM-95 has been removed from the palm tree.

KIYQ 90.9 will be launching in Pahrump soon.

Kiyq.net is the correct website. I will send a text to kick the automation box so y'all can listen to Vegas standards and lounge. Glad someone likes it.

This should turnout to be a good move for KIYQ. Being an LPFM on a crowded FM dial in Vegas has to be a tough road for success. With city grade coverage of Pahrump, they will be easily found by an audience that's perfect for their format (all those RV's full of retirees that pour into town)., and their conspiracy theory, UFO, and mob history programs. KIYQ should feel right at home in the Kingdom of Nye.

KJUL-FM Moapa Valley has filed to go silent as of 05/15/2026 saying the reason is financing.
Gosh, the station can't even stay on the air as a full time simulcast of 1280 KQLL, which has a translator as well? That's how bad things have gotten?

Let's remember, KJUL was at one time the #1 station in Las Vegas. And this was while the station was in receivership, originally at 104.3 FM. You may have heard this story that the station had financial problems (sounds familiar) and the guy appointed by the court to keep the station running said, let's just put a full time 24/7 music service on it while things get sorted out. Plug it in and just run it as is. Since Las Vegas has a lot of retirees, let's use "AM Only" (even though it is an FM station). A mix of Soft AC and Standards, similar to what America's Best Music is these days. AM Only had national DJs who'd talk every 15 minutes or so but not a lot.

Well, what do you know? It quickly went to #1 in the Arbitron ratings. OK, its audience was mostly 55+ although it was on in some businesses and stores. Eventually it was bought by Beasley who kept the format with local DJs. A few years later, due to the older audience, Beasley switched it with a co-owned country station. The country outlet got the better Las Vegas signal at 104.3 and K-Jewel was moved to 104.7, which has its tower in the suburbs. So K-Jewel went on a few more years with a so-so signal.

Could we say if it had remained a Soft AC station with an occasional Sinatra-Streisand-Nat King Cole title it would still be around? Not many national sponsors but enough mom-and-pop advertisers around Vegas, wanting their share of that large upper demo audience? But that would mean someone's gotta sell and service the mom-and-pop retailers and I guess nobody wants to do that now.

104.3 KJUL was a completely different license with full market coverage during a diary measurement area. 104.7 KJUL is a poor rimshot of the market.

The 102.3 translator is more than enough to cover the population centers of the Las Vegas market. And it does quite well doing so. That station is the successor to what 104.3 was 2-3 decades ago.

They tried a format similar to what you suggest until gradually shifting to Soft AC and later the simulcast of KQLL. The audience for what you suggest is simply not there. The advertiser support is REALLY not there. You cannot make money targeted people 75+, which is what Standards would be targeting now.

Well, yes. I did say it moved from 104.3, a full Las Vegas signal, to 104.7, with a limited signal. And what I suggested was not Standards as much as it would be Soft AC with an occasional Sinatra, Streisand and Nat King Cole song. They all had hits during the rock era.

I agree that most stations in most markets can't make money from a 55+ demo. But some markets with large retired populations have one or two stations that aim for them. For instance, Fort Myers has two Soft AC stations, both in the top five in ratings. Imagine, two dozen FM stations in Vegas chasing the dwindling number of people in their 20s, 30s and 40s who will listen. Shouldn't a retirement city like Las Vegas just have one 55+ station if Fort Myers has two?

As I said, you won't get agency buys from an office in New York. Either you would be willing to sell to local mom-and-pop advertisers or it wouldn't work.

Agreed. Was definitely a weaker signal than Revolution is. 104.7 was barely there in the house. Though sometimes I would listen as an alternative to KKLZ in the car. When they switched formats I went to a KKLZ, Sunny 106.5 mix.

What mom and pop advertisers are there buying radio anywhere? iHeart and Audacy are moving away from local sales departments since most ad buys are through local agencies. There's very little mom and pop businesses anywhere using radio. They're buying social media or other platforms where they can target who they reach, while there's also a major decline in independent businesses in general.

This isn't a Las Vegas problem or Kalamazoo problem or Springfield problem. But a national problem. You can't sell to advertisers that do not exist.

Whoever was on Kool 102 middays on Friday either doesnt know 104.7 is off the air. He said "kool 102.3 and 104.7" coming out of a break

One of the problems we run into out here is social media.. but not mom and pop buying ads on social media, its that they think posting on their page is enough.

One reason KIMX won't show in the book anymore and KLMI never has is we don't buy it. Signal doesnt cover enough of the market and we depend on local buys
