Breakfast with the Beatles loses an hour on KLOS

Just curious if you were to program klos what would you do with it if you were given free reign but what you do has to produce results which I am sure would be no problem. There numbers seem to be pretty good as is...If anything what would you change?

I'd probably tweak the music a little more and set new balance points between decades. Classic Rock is a unique format to program, as it still plays a lot of the biggest AOR hits from the 70's (and a decent amount from the 60's). I'd probably do away with the talkover of intros as that's a little too "top-40" for my sensibilities.

But the most important (and non-negotiable) condition would be total programming autonomy. I don't work well being second-guessed by management that lacks programming skills. As Jhani Kaye once said, programming is an instinctive skill and cannot be taught. I consider my talent to be my God-given gift and I can prove by the success I am having in Albuquerque that I know how to use that gift (and the owner reminds me of that often). There is something to be said for managing to stay in the PD chair for nearly four years and the management not having any plans to replace you.

If Meruelo Media would just concentrate on sales (like KRKE's owner does in ABQ), KLOS would do just fine. If the corporate offices can't keep themselves from meddling with a format that they don't understand, maybe it needs to be spun off, as I suggested in the post you replied to.

I've never been a Beatles fan, or listened to this show. Do they only play the Beatles music from the 60's as a group, or do they expand it with the solo stuff from over the past decades? How about the new Paul McCartney album? By doing do so, that might extend the shelf life for the program.

I don't listen either, as I am usually monitoring the playback of American Top 40: The 80s on KRKE at that time on Sundays. But I did pull the playlist for this past Sunday and solo work is also included:

Thanks for posting this K.M...and yes, they did play a newly released Paul McCartney single "Days We Left Behind". That Jackie DeShannon song is out of place. As far as I know, there isn't a Beatles connection.

Apparently depends on the station/host. I've heard stations with this programming where only songs recorded by/credited to the Beatles (as a band) are played. Other stations (including the local show, WTUE) will also play solo efforts by individual Beatles, as well as side projects like Wings and Ringo's All-Star Band. Still others are more accommodating yet in that they will play Beatle related songs/covers.

EIGHT MINUTE stopsets? You've got to be kidding.

My guess, looking at the context, is that Chris played that as a setup for the song that followed it.

Apparently, the show does very well with listener volume and hence, advertising. Seems strange to cut back on the hours allotted to a show that is reportedly very successful with advertiser spot load. Presuming advertiser demand to appear in the 11 AM hour moving forward will noticeably drop, it may become a metric to harness after a few weeks of this newly revised schedule so to reclaim that hour.

Maybe, maybe not. Here's the list of stopsets from 11:00am to midnight on Sunday:

Not a precipitous drop from what we saw 9:00-11:00am. And what we don't know is the amount of commercial time in "Breakfast" that was just ROS buys, which are not dependent on the non-regular format programming.

I would like to answer this---KLOS needs to return to its roots- bring back the 5 o'clock funnies, young comedians are whores and wll publicize any appearance,. If rock and roll isnt dead ( as I hear from friends) invite these bands into the studio ( stealing the KROQ vibe) Get rid of Greg B Harrell= dudes not funny, he's like that plastic tag in brand new underwear, just annoying. Eliminate the liners that air during the day- they are a time killer and arent funny, start sending interns to cover concerts , when they happen, broadcast live from the events---if possible. And for the love , stop playing Queen and Nirvanna 100 times a day.

Without nitpicking, how do you know that "returning to the roots" is what today's listeners want? I have learned by the experience of living through the changes in the business that nostalgia for nostalgia's sake does not resonate with a majority. That is why both Classic Rock and Classic Hits play the songs that are consensus favorites.

Your suggestions are easily interpreted as your own preferences. Programmers can't afford to let their personal feelings be part of the format ... success is dependent on airing what the present-day audience wants to hear.

This is also why board ops rarely have gotten elevated to PD, during the entire history of the business.

BTW, on Sunday KLOS played Queen seven times (three of those were "Under Pressure" which is more of a David Bowie song) and Nirvana seven times. Exaggeration doesn't help your argument.

I would rephrase that and say play a couple lesser known songs by them like sappy or breed by nirvana or don't stop or seaside rendezvous by queen....Yes I know taking a chance playing lesser known songs

In his defense, BWTB is on for three hours on Sunday and there may be other specialty or public affairs programming in the morning (I don't know, I am not up that early) so at minimum that is an average of one spin every three hours for both artists, neither of which has made any relevent new music in decades. I can see where he thinks those artists are being burned out err,I mean over played.

KRKE is an Albuquerque, New Mexico radio station that currently broadcasts as "101.3 The Hustle" (Classic Hip Hop). The station previously held a 0.6 audience share in the local Nielsen market during its prior Classic Hits format. [1]

Erroneous information there. 101.3 changed call letters to KYLZ when the owner transferred the KRKE calls in 2022 to the station I now program.

And we don't subscribe to the Arbitron ratings. If you actually knew anything, you would know that the public release of the 12+ numbers do not include non-subscribers. Lance has clarified that many, many times.

I just realized that in the above post, my cut-and-paste of KLOS's stopsets from Sunday did not make it to the post. Suffice it to say that most hours had two stopsets totaling more than eight minutes combined.

Please don’t be so condescending to posters who you think you know more than they do. This board will be more enjoyable without the snarky comments.
