I was being sarcastic. I hope you like cookie cutter housing. You might get a plaque if you're lucky.
I get the sarcasm, there’s plenty of it on this site. As for results, we’re open to whatever happens. I’m thankful for the support from Charlotte radio voices like John Hancock and Sheri Lynch. Some things are worth the effort, even if they don’t end the way you want.
Funny how 50kW WPTF in Raleigh is still surviving ... Even WKIX-AM (850) is still breathing. Both do have translators. Could it be differences between the Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte markets? Perhaps a different mentality or ways of management???
The key word is “surviving.” The numbers for both WPTF and WKIX are terrible. Both are below 1 shares, and, combined, they don’t even cume 50,000. Maybe they’re still able to make money, but they’re not the huge profit centers they once were. At some point, probably sooner than later, they’ll no longer be sustainable in their current states.
I know this is (in the words of Jack Allen from Adventures In Odyssey) keen insight into the obvious, but, I don't believe the comment to which you were replying, was encouragement.
You're right. At some point the two will change or shut down. Time moves on. But for now, WKIX is Don Curtis' personal jukebox so profit isn't a priority. WPTF is no doubt profitable in part because it's tied to NCNN. For the most part, Don doesn't operate unprofitable stations, at least not for long.
Don Curtis has a tight rope to walk. Back in the 2000s, he attempted to “revive” a few Triangle AM stations with music / oldies formats as he still believed in the medium, I believe 570 and 850. I’m not sure if he still does, but I know he still saw opportunity in the band after some others had already given up. Of course, things for AM radio are much more dire in 2026.
WPTF has struggled since iHeart took all of their Premiere shows and launched 106.1’s talk format.

That's your right. I just live in the real world. Charlotte City Council is 10 Democrats and 1 Republican. I don't think John Hancock is going to have much sway over them. WBT did not help any of them get elected.
I forgot about 570, WLLE (now WQDR-AM). But, 570 AM also has translators. I still remember Capitol Broadcasting turning in the license for 1550, WCLY. AM radio just isn't the same ol' friendly beast as it once was.
Don Curtis definitely has a handful of translators to help out his AM frequencies.

Well, that may be true when I think of 1110 WBT I think of the station that was pre-1990.
Fair enough. I don't expect John Hancock or anyone else to sway City Council. Their support simply shows that people who know the history of this place believe it's worth trying to preserve. Whether it succeeds or not, some things are worth making the effort for.
Outside of the morning show, the current programming on WBT just isn’t really my cup of tea, but that’s not what this is about. My focus here is strictly on the history and preservation side of things.
