WEPR goes HD … and talk

I noticed tonight that 90.1 WEPR has turned their HD on, and is broadcasting a new schedule with the SCPR news and talk format which has never been heard in the upstate outside of rimshot WNSC in Rock Hill. It’s always been the only market in the state that did not have the news and talk format. Fresh Air with Terry Gross is airing now.

I assume they’ll put the upcoming classical/indie/jazz format on HD2.

At a personal level I'm glad the station is doing this. However, we'll have to wait and see how the local citizenry reacts in terms of station support, etc.

Most likely they will all air news on HD1 and Sound Shift on HD2 on all of the stations. I can't see a good case for maintaining three radio/streaming formats long term.

I just had a chance to check, and WEPR is currently airing their normal Classical/News format, while WNSC is airing the News format. Maybe there was a mixup when the HD was turned on.
Well that’s a disappointment. I don’t get why they insist on carrying the classical format in the upstate when there’s no NPR news and talk outlet that’s receivable unlike the other markets in the state.

My guess though would be the news and classical format will go away once the new music stream they’re creating is put on the HD2’s. At least I hope.

Based on their Facebook page, it sounds like there was a mixup in the program feeds. I did ask on one of their previous postings whether they would be airing news on all of the HD1 stations, but no response. They may be waiting to get all of the stations upgraded and get any kinks worked out of the Sound Shift programming before announcing that classical is going away from the analog signals.
We're currently completing statewide technology upgrades to improve SC Public Radio's broadcast network and expand future local services.
During this work, some listeners may hear temporary interruptions or alternative programming. Our engineering team is actively working to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.
From the east side of Spartanburg, I am not getting a solid lock on the HD for WNSC, but its lower sideband is definitely impacting WNCW reception on 88.7.

I’m getting a fairly 50/50 HD lock down in Laurens county on WNSC. I’ve noticed WEPR’s HD drops out sometimes down here from the driving around I’ve done (I’m in the middle of the county basically).

I got a steady/clear enough signal from WLTR to where I’d think an HD would try to pop up or lock if it had been turned on. Maybe one of our Columbia friends can confirm if they haven’t turned it on, I know WRJA has theirs on.
