Hartford/New Haven Hartford Ratings Updated 07/16/26

Share in the 3s, cume barely over 50,000, listeners largely 55+. Is WTIC(AM) doomed? Audacy's big problem is owning three successful FMs that can't be blown up for news/talk.

Until 2021, WTIC 1080 had been mostly local talk shows on weekdays except for Rush Limbaugh noon to 3pm. But today, it's only local in AM and PM drive time. Everything else is syndicated. Brian Kilmeade and Erick Erickson in middays, Markley, Van Kamp & Robbins and Sean Hannity evenings, with Coast to Coast AM overnight. It's #9 in the latest ratings, just behind the Connecticut Public Radio station.

I think it still makes money, since talk stations can run more commercials than music stations. It likely has advertisers who've been on WTIC for decades. It has the Red Sox but I doubt it would change to Sports or anything else.

This is a fairly liberal state. Do most people really want conservative talk. If they went back to local all day would it help or has that ship sailed.

I know it doesn't make sense that conservative talk is all you get on commercial talk stations, even in places like New York, San Francisco, Portland and Boston. Only Chicago and Minneapolis have Progressive Talk stations. And we can say KFI Los Angeles and KIRO-FM Seattle have a broad view.

But in most cities anyone who doesn't want Trump-can-do-no-wrong-Democrats-are-never-right programming has only NPR. That's why in quite a few markets, the NPR station has better ratings than the commercial talk station.

Sports? Program it in house or LMA it to Good Karma like in NYC?

What play by play would they have besides Redsox and Patriots? Yankees and UCONN are on 97.9 and its lousy signal with some UCONN games on 105.9 FM.

Connectticut lost their WNBA Team and the Bridgeport Islanders hockey team. What's left? Bristol Blues? New Britan Bees? Whatever team is in Norwich? Are the Yard Goats and Wolfpack still on 1410 AM?

Lease the station to whomever's check doesn't bounce?

Sell the station to Relevant Radio and have Relevavant Radio.sell 910/1017?

That would be the Sea Unicorns, of the Futures League along with the Bees.

Also in state are the Danbury Westerners and Mystic Schooners, in the NECBL, a higher-level summer collegiate league that also includes the Blues. Obviously, of no interest to WTIC or anyone outside of the couple of hundred fans who attend their games.

The thing is, despite MAGA talking points, the values at NPR are the values of journalists, not of talk show hosts. (In fact, the network no longer has any call-in shows on its roster.) I remember once reading somewhere (though I've never looked to verify it) that the reason liberal talk has never done well (pardon what others may say) is that liberals don't spend their time listening to radio talk shows--they're too busy trying to change their little corners of the world.

This isn’t entirely true. Car Talk has relaunched as part of the subscription option called “NPR Plus”, people call in and leave messages for Ray to answer.
The NPR show 1A doesn't take direct calls. But it often tells listeners what will be discussed tomorrow and invites them to use their app to make their comments in advance.

I don't agree but it seems these days many shows, about politics, about sports, about most topics, don't want to take many phone calls. The host will just talk about his opinions and interview newsmakers. Callers are put on the air when they've exhausted everything else. Many sports talk shows have two or more hosts and they talk to each other.

The Ben Maller Show on Fox Sports Radio takes calls. The late night Westwood One Sports show takes calls. Jim Rome takes calls. The biggest challenge is getting new callers and not the same callers every day/evening.
