Usually, yes. But certain translators applied for during "AM revitalization" proceedings are permanently tied to their AM license.

This translator, W256DJ, is one of those which is permanently tied to WPBS, so they must be sold together, and if WPBS were to be cancelled, W256DJ must be forfeited as well.

I guess someone could apply to put one on 99.1, from scratch, the moment it is cancelled.

It's 160W, and must be directional or something--98.9 was on 99.1 until Class C1 WDEN in Macon complained. Of course, the Cumulus translators have really high HAATs.

Maybe Georgia Radio Alliance could buy it (along with the AM) and put Fox FM on it.

You bring up a point that many participants here misunderstand ... if they even know it at all.

The days of proposing a new facility from scratch by filing with the FCC are long gone. These days, there are filing windows, and if you miss one, you have no recourse but to wait for the next one.

You can't even find a vacant full-power FM allocation and apply for it. You have to wait until the FCC gathers up a bunch of them and conducts an auction of same. And it's not even an auction for the station construction permit itself, it's just the right to apply for that frequency in that community.

The next time I see someone say something along the lines of "I guess someone could apply to put one on 99.1, from scratch" I'm going to scream.

And the same goes for people who -- years after it became a reality -- do not realize that some translators are permanently attached to their parent AM ... because they came out of a filing window that specified up front that the proposed translators had to be pre-assigned to an existing AM, that the licenses would be tied together, and there was no divorcing them later. This has been discussed ad nauseum here on RD for years, and yet it still doesn't sink in for some reason.

With respect to our fellow posters, I have read thousands of threads on here since WPBS received its translator, and it was only in the last year or two that I learned about certain translators being permanently tied to their parent AMs (from Fybush, of course).

That specific fact is pretty niche knowledge. It seems self-evident that a station that is still on the air would want to keep its translator, so it has become more relevant as more AMs have begun to fail.

The difference is that you learned where so many have not. That puts you far above the posters that I was referencing.

What I would like to see is more people increasing their knowledge base from their experience. What I end up seeing is an apparent of knowledge going in one ear and out the other.
