Maine Saga turns in license for 970 WZAN

I think the cancellation that interested me most was that of WUFQ in Cross City, FL. That one hadn't been on the air that long, and its location made it difficult to receive in Gainesville, or so I've been told.

It was always too far from the Gainesville MSA to be significant. What doomed it was being in a town of less than 2,000 and a county of less than 18,000. This is like, but worse, than the High Springs station that tried to be a Gainesville station with inadequate coverage.
 
I am well aware that WZAN hasn’t been relevant for years, nor have I ever lived in Maine, but to see a 101-year-old station like the former WCSH just abruptly come to an end is still a very sad sight to behold indeed.

That's a great find on WCSH-AM. Wow. WCSH became WYNZ before it became WZAN.. Was a "Music of Your Life" Station before Saga got it. I'm sure the tower site real estate is worth plenty of money in the nice Portland suburb of Scarborough.

It's already been approved to be converted into 23 single family houses which the developer is starting the asking price per home at over $1 million.

I wonder if now, 101 years later, "every other home" still owns a radio.

What makes this even more interesting is that while WUFQ's COL was Cross City, its transmitter was located much closer to Chiefland to the south. However, there was no way that the station was going to get any closer to Gainesville--there is a full power K-Love outlet at 88.3 mHz that is now in the area so it was probably best to close this one down.

If I had to guess, at the very least, 1/3rd of people still have a radio in their home, but with TV, Streaming, and the Internet being far more relevant, it’s likely less than in the 40s, where radio was more prevalent than the newly popularized TV was at that time.

Couple of years ago the number I saw was 40% of American households don't have a radio.

Smart speakers have replaced the radio in the house. so radio station managers, make sure your Alexa skills work!
