Audacy On SiriusXM

Hearkening back to the old days when KIIS, WLW, Z100 etc. used to simulcast on XM.

I wonder how the sports play-by-play will work. When WLW was on XM 173 they blacked out the Reds and Bengals games so I assume it'll be like that.
I know management has changed, but let's don't forget that Audacy (as Entercom under the Fields) were the most vehement opposition of satellite radio 20+ years ago. Even to the point that they distributed anti-satellite radio ads to other station groups.

I think all broadcasters were on that train. The whole motivation behind HD was to counter satellite. This was before streaming.

Conversely Sirius was a vocal critic of AM/FM radio, and how they were much better. Former CEO Jim Meyer described AM/FM as the competition.

As I said earlier in the thread, this feels like a defeat of Sirius, that they would pay to license content from Audacy rather than create it themselves.

This isn’t accurate. It depends on your subscription. The top of the line subscriptions do have every feed of every game in the app. I favorite each team in my app and I have never not been able to listen to a game feed.

Give me some details, please. I have a Platinum Advantage plan (formerly known as AllAccess), and the local NFL game feeds were not available on the app last I'd checked. How do you do that, and what do you search? I'll grant you I last checked two or three years ago as I had little reason to think anything had changed. I could, however, use your help as I really haven't explored the app over the last couple years. If you're referring to MLB games, I don't personally care, but it's some information I might be able to give my ex-BIL, who was unhappy a few years ago about not being able to stream the Cardinals on his outdoor speaker through his phone. He got the stream for CBS Sports Radio on one of the HD channels of KYKY and was disappointed to have to bring out the old boombox and tune to 1120.

If I can walk my dog and listen to the Chiefs via the SXM app, that would be great news. Granted, I usually watch the games, but not having to plan my afternoon around them would be nice.

The rest of your comments about NFL and MLB streaming are accurate. I have listened to both via local radio station apps. Sometimes a station goofs or the IP is wrong so you can get access to games that you shouldn’t.

I've noticed that, too. I generally don't use single station apps, though I've downloaded a handful for CarPlay since TuneIn reduced preset availability for CarPlay last year (I was told that was an Apple requirement to keep people from poking around on the dash while driving), but I've found a few that tend to stream games when I listen via one of the aggregators.

Which feels like it would cost SiriusXM less money? Hiring and paying (and insuring) a bunch of new employees to create content or paying a flat fee to an outside source to create it?

I wonder if any of Sirius' in-house news, politics and sports talk channels will be axed in favor of all this programming from Audacy. As a sports fan whose main interests are baseball and hockey, my experience is that not only do MLB Network Radio and NHL Network Radio get more knowledgeable and well-spoken callers compared to the big-city sports talk stations I've heard, but those FM stations are often so consumed by the NFL, NBA and college football that the other sports are barely discussed at all.

I have the same plan, and the MLB and NFL games are all there. You can either find the linear channel that is carrying the game (they have a website and email that they send each week to tell you where to find the games), or on the app click on the Sports tab and navigate your way to your favorite team. Each team has a dedicated stream. The 360L radios also pick up the individual streams.

That's never been a concern. Ownership and exclusivity has been the concern. They call themselves "radio worth paying for." Now they're just refeeding what people can get for free. Why would I pay a subscription fee to listen to OTA radio?

Better reception? No picket fencing on a satellite.

Thanks! I'll check it out when football season starts in about six weeks. I remember Google and Bing were rarely accurate when searching out which SXM channels carried the various games. I'll make sure Sirius XM is whitelisted on my email as I don't remember ever seeing emails with the channel numbers for the games. My guess would be that I'm not getting them or that Gmail is sending them to my "promotions" folder, which I rarely check.

You wouldn't, of course. I suspect the motivation is more to keep sports fans and news junkies in the SXM ecosystem than to generate new subscribers, though I'm sure SXM wouldn't mind if that happened. SXM has always been deficient when it comes to local sports other than play-by-play, and the nine stations it chose for the widest availability were chosen for a reason. Those teams are the most popular across the entire country. News and talk, especially news, have also been areas where content has been lacking. It has the national feeds, but, even for national news, nobody does it like WINS, KCBS, and KNX.

If I already have SXM it will be better than tuning back to the radio.

It's certainly better than tuning to AM, though most of the stations being added now have FM simulcasts. Something else to keep in mind is that most cars have limited real estate on the dash. My car has 36 presets that I can set across all services (AM/FM/SXM), but most cars still have separate presets for each. As I mentioned above, I don't think this move is going to generate very many new subscribers, but, if I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan living in Iowa or South Dakota with an SXM subscription, I have a place where I can listen to the coverage in my own dash, and I no longer need a separate app to listen on my phone. If I just have the Audacy app for 93.7 The Fan, I can delete it and free up more screen real estate on my device.

Those FM signals don’t reach as far either.
