I get the point of those shows, and I know it isn't all about me-but those gardening shows have me hit the change button w incredible speed!
That was the time Cleveland Guardians baseball was begining.
WDOK keeps going down in the ratings, as does WAKS
WMJI is dominating big time over WDOK and also WHLK. The last two seem like they are fighting for scraps among listeners.
WAKS is a terribly programmed CHR. Even formerly programmed Z104-3 in Baltimore has somewhat increased their currents and cut back on the over repeated Rhythmic gold that take up the bulk of 96.5 Kiss' playlist. It's time to make a full switch back to CHR or change the format completely.
What songs aren't they playing that they should be playing? That's a big topic among CHR programmers now.
I took a look at a sample hour and it was all currents and recurrents with only one gold: A 2013 Katy Perry song.
106.5 has been a mostly successful flanker since the early days of Mix. It had a nice spike when it flipped from Mix to The Lake, but in the last several years it has settled into a groove that puts it right where Mix was 20 years ago. And outside of the Hot AC currents (which Mix actually played very few of. They aired Casey Kasem's Hot AC show 'American Top 20' the last several years Casey was on the air and there would be weeks they were only playing 3 or 4 of the HAC Top 20 that was on Casey's show), the station is virtually unchanged now when compared to the bulk of the Mix years. They just don't have an air staff.
That's a very long way to say that any share/rating/cume that is exclusive to The Lake still benefits WMJI since Majic and The Lake are likely bought together for advertisers.
Are either of those stations even programmed in house? Or are they airing variations of the iHeart national playlists? Kiss FM's counterpart in Cincinnati is doing just as poorly as 96.5 but doesn't seem to abandoning the "50/50" current/throwback mix. And Z104.3 Baltimore isn't faring any better in the 6+ listings as Kiss Cleveland or Kiss Cincinnati.
When was this sample hour? Looking at the past hour sample on their recently played songs: Rihanna, TI, Kardinal Official, Dr Dre some of those songs are over a decade old.... Ok I will give them the fact that they do play Sombr, (but won't play Choosin' Texas). But you might have to wait between 20 year old songs in between. Take a look at their top played songs... Most stations have abandoned half of those months ago. It's like a handpicked few of the current chart, then mixed in with a bunch of recurrents and gold.
Most played songs are Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress, and Bieber. Bieber is the oldest, but still qualifies as a current. All of them are in the chart.
But that ignores my question: What are they missing? Specifically what is a hit in Cleveland that might not be a hit in Kansas City?
Maybe the problem is Cleveland. Maybe the people in Cleveland don't respond to new music. That's what being a local programmer is. Recognizing what your market responds to.
If you look at the radio ratings of any American city, you will find that the top stations are almost always older demos these days.
Because the music business is global. At one time you had major recording artists living in Cleveland. Not anymore.
I recall that Java Joel was the Program Director for WAKS 96.5 FM. I thought it might have been him who added Weezer's version of "Africa", originally done by Toto, to the Kiss-FM current playlist. I thought it was a refreshing add. The recording is excellent, imo. Did other Kiss-FM stations also play Weezer's "Africa"?
