“This program may be pre-recorded”

I was on the road more than usual today. On KISW and later KZOK, I heard a quick blurb along the lines,”This program is (may be) pre-recorded.

Is this something new-ish? Never heard it before. And hearing on two different stations (and companies) it was strange.

It was during Ryan Castle’s show and whoever VT in the afternoon on KZOK.

It’s a very common occurrence for this message on iheart assets in Seattle, and elsewhere in the country. It’s a bit more of a surprise to hear it on KISW

The bio page on KZOK talks about how excited the afternoon guy (Tanner) is to be on Big 105.9. In Miami. So there's THAT. Actually it all is VT except for the AM show. Market #13, baby! It turns out the Jack FM concept was really ahead of its time!

TV takes that rule seriously too. That's why many times what was a live show being re-aired will have a 'previously recorded' bug in the upper corner. In the past radio has gotten away from announcing programming is prerecorded a couple times a day, Since the Commission has been issuing hefty fines for potentially masquerading as live, stations are quickly getting back on track.
Back in the day, the station I worked at had one of those announcements run wedged into a break played two times a day: "Some of the programs you hear on XXXX are prerecorded to a more convenient time."

pick 10 random iheart stations where you think theres VT talent from out of market... and then look at the talent bios.... they dont hide/edit anything.. and leave in the talents real location, station name, etc

Why should they hide it? It's actually a source of pride. They reach more people! If you're an air talent, that's what you want to do. National syndication is the ultimate goal. I know people who want to work for iHeart so they can do VT in other markets. They make additional money and get a larger audience. And listeners don't really care about geography.

I haven't noticed this recently, but that was one of the first things I noticed on the iHeart stations when I moved here just over a year ago. I found it a little odd when I heard very few elements on any of those stations that called for interaction even when it wouldn't be possible.

AS you may be aware or not.. I do voicetracking for another company.. a competitor to Westwood One and our goal is to sound as local as possible.. and we do a darn good job of it.

Radio itself isn't an interactive medium, which is why stations refer interactive actions to social media or web site.

They can put phone calls on the air, but those calls don't have to be local.

They should be proud. Syndication is a massive accomplishment in an industry as fickle as radio. However, it seems like it wouldn't hurt to change the website bio slightly to reflect the local audience, or to simply generalize the bio enough as to not mention another radio station. Small market radio stations that use syndicated programming do this all of the time successfully.

NEVER say you're live when you are not live.. That is the reason we run the exact same liner here in the Midwest. We have a station in the market that does pre-recorded remote breaks with their voice trackers. That's all good, until the tracker says "We're live at the Kingston Auto Mall" in a track. That can in fact get ya fined. At least that's my take on it

With that said, I don't like to do live remote breaks either. The whole "F*** her right in the P****" YouTube craze got me on that.

We record remote breaks on site and FTP them back. "Come and see us..." "That's where you'll find us right now..." "We're here at..." conveys the same message without saying the word "live."

"We are coming to you alive because although we aren't live, we certainly are the other thing" ;) 🤣

Back in the good ole days when TV stations signed off at night, often they would mention "portions of our broadcast day have been pre-recorded on film or videotape", probably for legal purposes. If a show aired that had a 'live' phone number to call and it was pre-recorded, a viewer could get angry at the station. Also applied with the west coast tape-delays for 'live' programming, like awards shows.

A Western US pet peeve for me is watching "The Voice" or DWTS, and having them tell you to "Vote now". A moment later, a text-box appears on screen that says voting closed hours ago. Thankfully the Voice moved to a two night format where the first night is the signing and the second night is voting. Still, for these national competition shows, a good chunk of people are not getting their voice heard, unless they vote blindly, rely on a friend from the East Coast to help them out, or they are about a week late. I'm not bitter, and I will still tune in when I can, but I can assure you I have found more wholesome things to do when they pull this stunt.

I could argue no, it wouldnt get you in trouble.. because.. WHAT is live.. that report .. or the fact youre there?

I've done remote breaks over the years that were recorded where i didnt begin or end with a live mention, but it was thrown in there in a not so prominent place in the break.. and the breaks werent live because we had no other way to get audio back excvept file transfer
