“Tony Katz Tonight” to launch on WIBC

Talker Tony Katz has signed a deal with Emmis to take over the 9 PM – Midnight slot on WIBC-FM Indianapolis on 11/11.* “Tony Katz Tonight” is a live call in show that mixes politics, comedy and social media – will begin in the Crossroads of America. Katz will broadcast out of his Tomorrow Media [...]

Now if they would just launch a live person in the newsroom all weekend--preferably one capable of reading a forecast.

Tony Katz sounds like he'd work better on an east coast station, not Indianapolis. He seems to get no calls, probably because very few people listen. Since they're not really local at that time, they'd be better off picking up Alan Combs if that show is still around. It's much more left leaning than their other shows, but it's more entertaining. Even Free Talk Live would be better.

WIBC did a good job covering the Sunday storms, at least in the afternoon when they had their best person on the air. Steve Simpson is wasted on that lame morning show. He should be news director. The station is in free-fall in many dayparts though. The cluster has TWO full time sports stations yet they stick play-by play on WIBC. The people who really care about those games are watching them on tv anyway. A couple of weeks ago they ran a 14+ minute stop set one night. It was a parade of endorsements. Those things tend to lose their effectiveness and their people lose credibility when they do so many of them.

I tuned in Sunday evening to get an update on the storms and heard an IU basketball game.
What they have done to that radio station is negligent at best, criminal at worst. WXNT may have bailed out of the format too soon. Or maybe when WXLW gets a shot at a 250 watt FM translator under the coming FCC rules...well, a guy can dream. WIBC doesn't want to serve the public with constant information. Maybe someone else will one day.

They really need to do something about their production. Jeff talks about all the great talent they have, yet all I hear is the same voice on about 85% of their commercials (at least on the web stream). And when I listen to the sports station, it's all endorsements. That is really tiring and they all sound very unprofessional. How far we have come from the days of quality radio.

It would appear that they are no longer able to get the slick sounding well produced spots that come with national buys. That leaves them with their people constantly endorsing things and losing a lot of credibility. A couple of endorsements at a time wouldn't be so bad, but they seem to be running 8 or more at any one time.

Flip23, agreed. But it really doesn't have to be that way. They should try to find other, more creative options.

Well, you know, it's tough programming a radio station these days. Having to go to all those sales (value added) meetings, promotions meetings, breaking down the PPM numbers, a lack of support staff, and basically not having to worry about competition. Why does anyone have to try harder to be better and put together a quality product?

Why does WXLW need a 250 FM Translator wjhen WXLW has a FM Simulcast already in 95.9 fm. unless one of the 2 frequencies flip to another format. i dont see 950 needing a fm translator

On Sunday they were running a weather forecast talking about the lows for Saturday night. This station can't even get their weather forecasts right. They seem to be headed to having the same type of problems WXNT had when nobody was doing quality control there.

Have you ever tried to listen to WFDM 95.9 on Monument Circle? That's why. They can't challenge 93 because their signals are a significant impediment. Would a translator help? Depends on where they put it. If they could put 250 watts on the WTHR or WXIN tower, it could work out.

Thank you. Having WFDM on a signal equal to 107.5's changes the landscape in Marion County. Granted, programming would have to be improved (especially on weekends) as well, but there's not a lot of motivation to invest in live/local programming when the milk truck isn't delivering to all the houses on the route.

But isnt that the #1 Reason as to why WFDM is on 950 AM

During the day, yes. At night, that 30 watts on AM doesn't quite do what 250 watts on FM would.

I doubt it. XL950 was drawing a 0.0 for many books before the decision to simulcast doing sports off the satellite. Almost like WXNT is now...

Sports is on plenty of Indy frequencies. Full time on 4 of them, and part time on at least 2 others. No wonder WXNT shows up with an 0.0 or an 0.1
