1/11 "Daily Show": Verizon infomercial?

The cell phone wars are spilling over to late night television. The first segment of last night's "Daily Show" was on the iPhone coming to the Verizon network. However, I felt like it was just a seven minute commercial for Verizon, which is one of the show's most prominent sponsors. This was just as bad, if not worse, than Conan's shilling for AT&T (one of his new show's biggest advertisers) during a segment of his show last month.

Maybe I'm being a bit too critical. AT&T has gotten a lot of bad publicity over the years for its iPhone-related problems. But TDS should have disclosed that Verizon sponsors their show.

I can see how the Daily Show bit could be perceived as a commercial pitch, but really, it wasn't that far from the truth. AT&T's network sucks. I say Rule the Air. Also, this post is in no way intended as an advertisement for Verizon, America's largest 3G network and now a proud carrier of the iPhone. Verizon Verizon Verizon.

Yea, except the network doesnt suck. I have it since high school with no problems. And do play the "big city card" I'm 10 minutes away from Newark, about 25 by train from NYC and no problems with it when I go to either city. At first I was thinking its iPhones themselves that have problems, still do actually, but whenever my sister comes back and goes in to the office to work (Prudential Newark) she also has no problems whatsoever. Also selling phones (and MP3 players) for close to 2 years I could tell that I've had more problems with Verizon phones and Apple MP3 players than the other types. I stopped selling them before iPhone 1 came out so I cant tell you if its still the same ammount.

Verizon can keep their CDMA tech and the inability to make a call and surf the web at the same time, and the sometimes (but not always) slower 3G speeds. Also Apple can keep their buzzwords and never model every year approach. I'm happy with AT&T and my current non-iPhone phone.

Stewart's show wasn't so much a commercial for Verizon as a hatchet-job on AT&T. I'd guess that a couple of the show's writers had unpleasant experiences with AT&T.

I've used both carriers, but went back to AT&T because I benefit from the rollover minutes, which Verizon doesn't offer, so I save a few bucks.

I personally haven't had any more frequent network problems (dropped calls, etc.) from AT&T than I had with Verizon. Both carriers have been decent, IMO.

I live in San Francisco, and I've heard that the AT&T network can get overloaded during business hours in the downtown Financial District (tall buildings, densely populated during the day, lots of people on the internet). I guess that would bother me too, but fortunately, I don't work there.

I've been on Verizon since it was GTE Wireless in my area in the late 90's. They've always had a better coverage area in NW TN than AT&T here. But then some of the people I work with in SW TN say that AT&T is better there, and I do have more problems with Verizon there.

Most other carriers (Sprint, T Mobile, etc.) only have coverage along the Interstate areas between Memphis and Nashville. To me that's almost useless since I'm likely to be anywhere within 75 miles from Jackson, TN working from one day to the next.
