$1 Million Question: How Long You Think Hot 107.7 will remain in it current format?

I know Hot 107.7 has only 1 full book under its belt, but the numbers were low even for a new Urban AC (2.6 share for 12+). Since then Hot 107.7 has went on this "This is _________ Weekend on Hot 107.7" trend like 98.7 Kiss FM does, which IMO is down right pathethic and so unoriginal. I thought Hot was going to bring something original and new to this market, but damn was I wrong. I was wondering how long can Hot 107.7 maintain the current format before it admits defeat on the Urban AC front? (Side Note: Those Michael Baisden # for the 2-6PM slot were very low and laughable. That show has Hot placed at like 17th for that timeslot.)
______________

17th? What's beneath it, the AM gospel stations and 97.3?

I think they're committed to being Kiss' poor relation for the long haul. It'll be at least a year before they realize that being a current-based urban is what they should've done all along.

Baisden will be gone way before that, most likely.

Well, that doesn't surprise me that Hot is going to continue trying to take down Kiss FM for the next 8 1/2 months (2 books). I figured that their research would have revealed that Birmingham is well served (if not overserved) in the 25-54 demo with not 1 but 3 Urban AC/Oldies outlets: Kiss on the FM and WATV & WJLD on the AM. The sad truth is the real urban demo that is being really underserved in this market is still the 18-34 demo. I am however on the upper end of that demo, but many people including myself feel that they are not the target demo of Jamz. The common opinion/complaint is that the station is too repetitive, and that it plays all hip hop club songs now and no real R&B songs anymore. IMO, I feel that Jamz need a slow jams show at least 5 nights a week to bring in more people on my end of that demo.

I'm not surprised or disappointed. I thought that format change was a mistake from the beginning. They should have started smaller and build from there. But they didn't and this is what they have to work with now. I wonder how they will do in the next book though, if the numbers will be consistent, fall or do anything...

I don't think just a slow jamz show alone will fix their problems. They need to slow down their rotations some and generally play more r&b throughout the whole day. Playing heavy club type songs will work well for the evening slot until about 10 or 11, but everywhere else really needs more r&b and less repetition.

Good lord people the book isn't even out yet. The first part of the book they didn't have any advertising out about it.

Give them at least one more book before you right them off.

Thank You!

Thank you! I would've hoped someone would express the near lunacy of predicting a new station's failure based upon it's first published ratings. "The Bull" didn't give WZZK cow patties overnight, IIRC.

Here's some advice that won't cost anybody a million dollars: Give WUHT a fair chance to catch listeners and advertisers, then when the first real Summer or Fall numbers come out, then call Smith & Gaston to get ready (if it's necessary).

With a signal to match Kiss and beat Jamz, 107.7 is likely in this for the long haul.

I will get the gun ready and loaded. I have a feeling that in about 1 year from now Hot's Urban AC format will be put to pasture. 98.7 Kiss FM is sounding more on-point than ever and the spring numbers show that their heritage would take an act of Congress to break.

I mean why waste a perfectly good signal with an one-side format when you can take down both heritage stations with a diversified format. They could at least try to be an Urban Contemporary (like their Urban precessor WENN). They could keep the R&B heavy playlist (just cut back on some of the early '80s R&B to the midday & late night hours), but with some current mainstream hip hop as part of its playlist like V-103 Atlanta, WPGC 95.5 D.C., or WGCI Chicago (they're not #1 in their markets because they're only game in their towns).

I agree 100%. However, like most Southern Urbans, the only time slot that would have just as much R&B as the slow jams show is the midday (10AM-2PM) daypart. I mean just look at 103.1 WEUP, they are a classic example.
______________

I would agree with that. I would love to see that. Remain heavy r&b, but cut back on the 80's old school r&b during the afternoon and evenings and save it for middays and late nights. Replace the 80's r&b in the afternoon and evenings with some hip hop. That would make for a great station for Birmingham I think. I do agree though that we won't really get a good look at how the station is doing until a couple more books. I'm sure if Citadel is doing something that isn't working, they will make some neccessary changes, because I do believe they are in it for the long haul.
