10,000 HD Radios on the wall....

M

According to an article in the March 1 Radio World, Sangean shipped ten thousand HD units in December when their HD radio and tuner were introduced, and they're now selling at a rate of "several hundred a week".

I'm glad you told us the HD radios are still on the wall, at the in store display, where they don't pick up much.
Right where you would expect HD radios to be. Nothing new.

You really need to get your eyes checked. Mike quoted Sangean and said they're now selling at a rate of "several hundred a week."

Several hundred a week "isn't much" if that's the total of all radios sold. Several hundred a week FROM ONE MANUFACTURER, when there are now many IS A LOT. And face it, Sangean probably isn't one of the biggest. There's more "momentum" behind the Boston Acoustics and Accurian radios, becasue they've been out there for a while, and because most Americans buy RADIOS, not component tuners.

Besides..."several hundred a week" is their sales of the TUNER, not all (both) models they sell. I'd guess the table model would sell A LOT more.

Lots of fm dxers are discovering that the Sangean is a bit of a hot rod for ANALOG signals, especially now that the new firmware allows it to be locked in analog mode (ALL HD radios should allow this. Sometimes HD is "on the threshold" and annoyingly switches back and forth. This is more rare than you might imagine, but it DOES happen...and it's infuriating...especially because it would be so simple to fix!)

Sangean sells "several hundred a week" to distributors and stores who stock it, not usually direct to consumers. Once the shelves are full and all the stores and distributors have all the new product they need, we might get a more realistic turnover rate.
I'm not the one who is blind, and I am not the one who "really need(s) to get your eyes checked", thanks.

From Mike:

The HD supporters have repeatedly stated that you hated, and were against DXers, (even though HD supporters, by definition, are really all DXers). Now, suddenly, HD supporters depend on DXers for HD radio sales. You should be kinder to DXers, if you depend on them to buy HD radios.
If HD radio depends solely on a small number of DXers for listeners, and not the general public, then they will never generate enough listeners to even pay the electric bills on all those expensive, highly inefficient HD transmitters.

I saw this number quoted, by a Sangean employee, on another site.

Actually Sangean says that a few hundred a week are being sold TO CUSTOMERS. The 10,000 number was the initial shipment to dealers...which would have "stocked them up" (unless they've gotten tons of new dealers, which I doubt in the few short weeks since the products were introduced). Additional shipments would be BECAUSE THEY'RE SELLING.

And I always was, am, and always will be a dxer...which is why I am AGAINST AM HD until it's proven to me that it doesn't damage DX reception. I am convinced (from my own experience) that FM HD doesn't. And screw HD for a moment. If you haven't tried one of these software-defined wonders, and DO consider yourself a dxer, you're denying yourself a real treat. Lock it in analog if you wish (and you probably should for picking out stations from the distance). Remember all the multiple if bandwidth settings, blend settings, and multipath minimizing doo-dads from "super-tuners" of the past? These are all built into these two hundred dollar freakin' tuners, and take place AUTOMATICALLY. Imagine a 200 dollar tuner that can stop down narrower than (insert supertuner here...the best dx model I ever had was a JVC 1100BK...but then I'm not rich enough for a Magnum Dynalab) and upen up WIDE for that clear 100 kilowatter down the road. HD is gravy on these things! Even if HD fails (doubtful), these Sangean wonders will be doing great things for analog reception in 20 years. There's even sunchronous detection on AM! This technology has NEVER been available on a component stereo tuner (previously you could only get sync-detection on mega-expensive communications receivers, and a couple of Sony portables. And the portables are drying up as Sony leaves shortwave portables to the Chinese, and concentrates on other market sectors).
