10,000 watts starting from Cramerton

WOHS, 730 kHz, Shelby, NC has filed to change city of license from Shelby, NC to Cramerton, NC near Belton and increase daytime power from 1000 watts to 10,000 watts operating from the west tower of 1270 WCGC. WOHS has operated in Shelby since August 1946. Nightime power will be 195 watts. Both day and night, non directional.

That should be some signal at that Freq. I know the station @ 730 AM near me is only 1kw and it gets out quite well. It doesn't hurt that there ground system is right next to a lake either.

On a different note Art. When do you expect to get 540 up and running in Sylva?

And I wonder what Lanny Ford plans to do in this move? Is he keeping WOHS or selling to GHB, since the plan for WOHS is to broadcast from one of GHB's station's towers in Belmont -- i.e., WCGC. I still can't believe Mr. Ford cut Andy Foster loose a couple of years back now he's moving one of Shelby's heritage stations. Also, isn't it ironic that WOHS is following in its former sister FM's footsteps and moving toward Charlotte some 25 years later? Who udda thunk it?

Hey Art, You get Sylva going perhaps you could bring Hoyt Potts back from the dead to run it for you. I know he's buried up there somewhere. I got my 1st radio job doing mornings at WTLK when his partners let him go back in 1971 I think. I was a Sophomore in high school did 6 to 8 and off to a full day at school. What an education I got...and NOT at school.

Hearing rumors of a format change...Hispanic..?

I don't understand why people automatically think of Hispanic formats. I think we are fairly saturated right now with 3 FM's and at least 3 AM's. I'm not seeing the numbers in the ratings to even justify those 6.

Everyone talks about how agencies don't buy the 50+ demographic. Seems like they could sell direct to local businesses like it used to be done. It's probably not as easy or profitable but if you had some good sales folks I would think some good money could be made.

Will WOHS try to go up against WBT and like so many others fall by the wayside?

...well if you compare WOHS's potential signal to WDYT's current, it would appear WOHS would have a better shot -- 730 is a better AM frequency than 1220; 10kw ND days at 730 versus 1220's 25 kw DA (even with 15 kw less at 730, the signal will at least match if not exceed 1220's); the proposed 730 tower site is only about 2 miles from the Meck county line versus 10 miles for WDYT's; and 730 would likely not have the consistent interference heard on 1220 the closer a listener is to Charlotte -- this has been reported as some type of distortion caused by 610 WFNZ. Finally, WOHS's 195-watt night signal should substancially surpass WDYT's at 106 watts. Can WOHS compete with WBT? If HRN keeps WOHS, I just don't think they will dole out enough $$ to do professional, kick butt news-talk and STICK with it. Look at how long HRN kept news-talk on 1350 WZGM or WZRN or whatever it was in Asheville.

You're right Mike. I was talking with Jim Gilley of WMCT the other day and we discussed how a group of sales people who hit the streets every day would make it through these times as opposed to those who were use to only knowing how to use a phone and a fax. SOME people don't care about ratings.....just results.
