10 best and 10 worst tv ownership

In your opinion which companies are the best and which companies are the worst when it comes to running a tv station. Give the reason why do you think this company is the best or worst in the business.

Given all the negative comments it's received on this board concerning it's soon-to-close "News Central" concept, wouldn't Sinclair be near the top of the list of worst TV owners??

Between the problems of selling their San Francisco & Detroit WB stations (since at least one of them will have to go to independent status) and cancelling a couple of news operations in small markets (Duluth & Ft. Wayne) last year, Granite is at the top of the list too. At least they have financial problems to blame. AFAIK, Sinclair is in pretty good shape money-wise. Of course, staying out of debt is all part of being a good owner.

Nexstar
Sinclair
Granite

All cheap, bottom-line companies that have ruined a number of stations they've purchased over the years, with their penny-pinching tactics.
Nexstar for example gets rid of, or forces out, those employees making decent salaries and replaces them with minimum-wage wonders.
Granite ruined one of Buffalo's best TV stations, WKBW, by playing the cheap game.
Sinclair gave us News Central. Need I say more?

Some Examples of the Worst

If you're talking about "companies that run their stations in a way that affects the viewer"...Sinclair and NexStar would have to be the two biggest nominees in the TV Owners Hall of Shame.

This includes such things as badly programmed local newscasts (or the now-failed Sinclair "News Central" experiment), having fights with cable operators over compensation (causing channels to be pulled from local systems), or a general lack of enthusiasm to build out digital/HDTV operations.

Most of this comes from an effort to squeeze every possible last penny from an expensive, but usually profitable, TV operation.

Examples:

* When CBS took over Sinclair's KOVR/13 in the Sacramento market, it had to spend millions upon millions of dollars to upgrade the station's technical facilities, buy a helicopter and other such things. Incoming engineers from then-Viacom's KMAX/31 found wheezing, aging equipment everywhere they turned.

* NexStar owns or operates two of the network affiliates in the Erie PA market, and neither of them pass through their networks' HDTV feeds. The company won't spend the estimated $30-50,000 to put in the equipment.

* Sinclair frequently tussles with local cable operators, trying to get extra monetary compensation for carriage of their signals. This has occasionally forced Sinclair-owned channels off of cable in some markets. NexStar (jokingly called "DeathStar" in the business) has done the same.

Never worked at theses companies, but I do have friends who tell me how bad it is to work there, and it would be: Deathstar (Nexstar) and Sinclair. I hear more bad things about Nexstar than Sinclair.

I have heard good things about Raycom Media and Jefferson-Pilot Communications though. Can anyone back up that statement, or have you heard otherwise?

You may find this hard to beleive but friends that work at Clear Channel TV stations tell me C. C. is pretty good to work for. They keep the stations up -equiptment wise, treat the employees fairly well with money and benefits, and don't mess with the unions.
All the broadcasting companies now days makes me nostolgic for the days of Roy H. Park!
