10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 1500 kHz

What do you get on 1500 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH, 1500 is a fuzzy WLQV/Detroit, MI with a religious format and a signal that is nulled towards the south. At night it's a jumble of stations including WLQV

~ 1.5 mi S of El Cajon, CA
using various radios & antennas, best of which would be something like Tecsun PL-398mp, GE Superradio III, Select-A-Tenna, utility pole groundwire, metal fence

Day: pretty much nada. I've seen a TIS listed for Qualcomm Stadium (about 8 mi W of me) on 1500, but can't hear them. (I think I've heard their carrier with no modulation some time ago, but don't recall recently hearing it.)

Night: often KSJX San Jose, with KSTP St. Paul making frequent appearances. Both very weak. I think 1500 is probably the "quietest" (weakest average signal) frequency (of those that have stations in North America) on the dial here after 1610 and 530.

NE NC car radio. 1500 WFED Washington, DC is heard when it is quiet. Regular day in winter. Sometimes in summer. Nothing else heard on 1500.

In East Texas near Tyler during the day it's a very weak KJIM from Sherman, about 65 miles north of Dallas. At night it's a mix of KSTP and XEDF Mexico City, neither of which are exceptional signals.

During the daytime, I get daytimer WAKE Valparaiso, IN. At night, it's splatter in most of Lake County Indiana, due to WAKE broadcasting at 25 watts at night. I used to get KSTP St Paul, MN at night when WAKE signed off. Not now with WAKE being allowed to broadcast at night on a signal that only goes 5 miles outside of the Valparaiso city limits, & at least into most of Lake County Indiana, you hear KSTP & WAKE fighting for dominance.

Bellevue, WA

Day-nothing
Night-usually a weak KSTP St. Paul, MN [1400 mi E]. Sometimes nip & tuck with KSJX San Jose, CA [700 mi S]. Frequency is very quiet at night.

Far Northwest Suburban Chicago....

Day: WPJX, Zion, IL. Weak

Night: A weak KSTP, if anything. I've heard Washington a couple of times....as WTOP previously and now WFED. 1500 is also relatively quiet around here at night.

Nothing during the day,a mess a night with sometimes 1500 WFED out of Washington DC coming in ::)

>Around Cincinnati, WLW can be heard on 1400.

This could result from one or both of these issues:

  • Front-end overload in the receiver, which receiver generates WLW harmonics internally.
  • Rectification, harmonic generation, and re-radiation of the WLW signal on those frequencies by poorly bonded electrical conductors near the receiver.

Do you ever get a harmonic from WSB? Around Cincinnati, WLW can be heard on 1400.

I've never gotten that

Western WA state.

Nothing during the day, and at night KSTP sometimes comes in at varying strengths through the KGA-1510 splash. KSJX will sometimes appear later on.

Any other station on that frequency has been rare.

1500 used to be CKAY Duncan, BC before switching to FM (CJSU 89.7) In spite of being way up on the coast of Vancouver Island, they used to put a pretty good signal into Puget Sound.

With NOTHING anywhere on 1500 for a 1000+ miles, KSTP is a fairly easy catch in Puget Sound at night (albeit usually a weak one.)

On my just-concluded road trip, I had KSTP nightly in Banff, Vancouver, Victoria, and Portland. Generally weak, but stronger in Banff. 1500 turned into the "mystery channel" with non-sports English language talk fading in and out in Nor-Cal (Santa Rosa), then Spanish in the Southern California desert later in the week.
