10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 730 kHz

What do you get on 730 AM?

In Vermilion, OH I get WJYM/Bowling Green, OH during the day clear and at night with others underneath.

Where I'm currently staying for a few days in Indianola, IA I'm hearing nothing on 730 during the day. Will try to ID something tonight.

Nothing during the day,730 Fox Sports out of Memphis at night

From NE NC car radio. 730 days is WFMC Goldsboro, NC. Critical hours regularly hear WTNT Alexandria, VA. Also CKAC Montreal and WZGV Cramerton, NC (Charlotte metro).

In East Texas near Tyler during the day it's KKDA Grand Prairie/Dallas (500 watts full-time directional). They're all but gone at night, when XEX owns the frequency.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

Day: WGN splatter

Night: On occasion XEX has been able to break through the WGN slop. Also CKDM, but less frequently. I've also heard CKAC, but not recently.

Northern VA,

Days it's local WTNT in Alexandria,

Currently at night, it a kind of a mess with WTNT mixed in.

Previous nighttime receptions, I heard the strange wobbly sound coming from Cuba a couple of years ago, and before that, WZGV from NC during the night.

Near north Chicago suburbs I also used to hear XEX around WGN's splatter, but I haven't heard it in a long time.

Not only is there nothing even remotely nearby for me to hear on this channel from Baldwin County, Alabama, I couldn't even tell you what's a regular here at night. I did ID KQPN from Memphis once earlier this month, but I'm pretty sure that was a fluke.

Here it is the local WLTQ, a Catholic station. Probably the strongest AM signal on the SC coast. 5kw out of the marsh in West Ashley, can be heard hundreds of miles into Florida daytime (as far as West Palm Beach), and does well inland too. Weaker at night, but still covers most of immediate Charleston area.

Heard other signals there at night, but only one I could identify was KQPN (when the local was off for a few months). Amazing their nighttime signal with just 1000 watts.

Update from my original post: I monitored 730 last night here at my current location in Indianola, IA and I heard 2 Spanish stations, one with talk and another with music. Also heard what sounded like an oldies station in the mix. Couldn't get IDs on them.

In Seattle, 730 is usually CHMJ Vancouver, BC "AM 730, All Traffic All The Time", a 50kw TIS/weather stn with commercials. At night it mixes with other stations, usually with CKDM Dauphin, MB, NW of Winnipeg. I have also logged KULE Ephrata, WA; KEZX Medford, OR; KINF Boise, ID and KSVN Ogden, UT on the frequency. Still trying for XEX in Mexico City with no luck.

In south Florida, it's pretty much Radio Progreso in Cuba, day & night, although not strong. I think I can faintly get WWTK Lake Placid FL in the day, as well.

I have not heard XEX in years. I remember it as a top 40 station in the early 70s, "Radio 73". I wonder if any airchecks of this surivive.

CKAC never.

Back before US stations could operate at night, once I heard Gospel programming in English on 730....turned out to be TGN (called on air as TGNA, their shortwave station) in Guatemala.

I also think back in the day, I caught Radio Reloj in Costa Rica, which I also heard on FM & SW.

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Daytime: zippo; maybe a small trace of WTNT from Northern VA.
Night: not very much, XEX a few times.

From Western Michigan

Days: WVFN

DXing during the night hours has brought in these, sorted closest to most distant:

WJYM Bowling Green, OH.
WJMT Merrill, IN.
WPIT Pittsburgh, PA.
KWRE Warrenton, MO.
WFMW Madisonville, KY.
KWOA Worthington, MN.
WMNA Gretna, VA.
WTNT Alexandria, VA.
WUMP Madison, AL.
KQPN West Memphis, TN.
CKAC Montréal
KLOE Goodland, KS.
CKDM Dauphin, Manitoba
KKDA Grand Prairie, TX.
XEX Mexico D.F.

Surprisingly (given the low power), KKDA "Soul 73" was heard numerous times here at good levels, especially when conditions favored the Southwest.

Crystal Lake, IL (40 miles NW of Chicago)

Days: empty.

Nights:
KWRE Warrenton, MO
CKAC Montréal, QC
CKDM Dauphin, Manitoba
WXMT Merrill, WI
XEX Mexico City, D.F.

I just heard a Spanish station on 730 before it faded away at 5 AM. Probably not XEX since it is sports talk in Spanish after a Google search. I heard music--a guitar and men singing, on this unknown. A Cuban 730?

Prolly. If you hear it again, if you live in the East, check for parallel on AM 640 Radio Progreso. If 640 is no good for you, try 690/880/890/900.
